arrived last night in athens around 11, two full days after i left bologna sunday morning. in total, the travel here took 3 days, including the train ride to italy. my guess is that if you don't mind sleeping on trains and have a good connection, you can probably cut it down to 48 hours.

not as dead as i expected after a night on an air mattress in a random corner on a ferry deck. despite the stress of lack of information where and when the next train/bus/boat leaves, quite zen and wishing I didn‘t have to finish my presentation but read or stare out of the window instead.

more than 24 hours later, in patras. only one change in mode of transport away from athens. the ferry was late, meaning that the 2 hours budgeted in to get from the port to the bus terminal weren’t enough. nice 30 min walk still. (local bus was delayed and i didn‘t want to gamble on it coming still)

navigating a port as a foot passenger is very confusing and despite having 6 hours between my train arriving and the ship leaving i was pretty stressed and happy i made it to the right terminal. still enough time for 1-2 macchiatos, reading a bit, staring into the distance in the mid-day heat haze

this morning i took the train from bologna to ancona, where I am currently waiting for the ferry to patras. To bologna (where i spent a week since it was sort of on the way) it was 11 hours by train, 13 after factoring in german train delays.

experiencing space, mobility, and geographical distance in interesting ways while travelling to the EAEPE conference in Greece. one way by train and ferry, one way by plane (and train). comparing pure travel time and cost alone is crazy, the experience probably even more

the mid-transition concept has been living rent-free in my brain

i may or may not document the experience of going to a conference in athens and not flying for at least one way of the journey. in some way taking a plane for the way back feels even more crazy because you see the difference of the different modes of transportation even more.

"have you considered that interest rate costs of the borrowing needed to buy this train have been higher for the EU than they might have been for germany?“ i am fun company on holidays

Amazing how the RRF is everywhere - while we looked at the "money in“ side of NextGenerationEU in our paper, the "money out“ pops up in unexpected places. Schrödinger’s off-balance sheet fiscal agency meets whimsical tram in the baltic sea town where i spent summers as a kid…

EPOG over and out. A wild ride, could not have asked for better company on this journey of stress-loaded coffee breaks, jokes about everything from norwegian politics to rats, mental health walks, beach trips, and a final voyage to venice 🥹

I didn't think I could still be shocked by fossil fuel companies' lobbying tactics but this story, first revealed by Malene Emilie Rustad at the Norwegian publication E24, is amazing.
