bezos and the post is yet another reminder that it's impossible to have billions of dollars and operate in the public interest at the same time. nobody with that kind of money got it by looking out for other people or putting the common good first. that's why it's so antithetical to journalism

I may be a naive little baby but I don't think sinister racist YouTubers should be on Question Time at all. Booking Nick Griffin was massively controversial in 2009 but I can only imagine that the bookers don't care anymore, which seems bad
Konstantin Kisin claims that these exchanges are "not a debate about whether Rishi Sunak is English or British"

Nelson: "Rishi Sunak is English?"
Kisin: "He’s a brown Hindu, how can he be English?”

Alexander: You said “he’s a brown Hindu, how is he english?
Kisin: That's not what I said."

Unbelievably bleak to see journalists quoting an LLM bot's output as if it's an agent capable of making statements that mean something.

I cannot emphasize enough that the attempts to anthropomorphize an algorithm is a fundamental act of journalistic malpractice and an intentional act to shield the people responsible for this. It's fucking shameful.

Do not quote Grok (or indeed any LLM) as if it is a thing with thoughts or agency. This is really poor journalism.

Didn't realise this was Martin Parr. If you feel like being happy, watch this 20min documentary on the gloriously unchanging Teddy Gray's sweet factory in Dudley. How they make Humbugs and rock will blow your prefrontal cortex like a 3 amp fuse.

I think there’s a real “survivorship bias” at play also where anyone capable of being sated by even regular levels of high wealth taps out and just enjoys it, leaving only the insatiable to pursue the truly endless accumulation.

What I’m saying is: seizing their assets is for their own good.
Plato argued in the Republic that the 'tyrant,' or someone with unlimited wealth and power, would live the worst possible life because his soul would be devoured by lawless, unlimited desires that could never be sated. I think we've gotten confirmation of this from more cases than Trump lately
I always thought Plato was pretty pollyannaish on this point, but this is decent evidence for the view that a man of bad character will therefore be unhappy even with every external trapping of success and good fortune.

When you're raising a child it's daunting and frightening and lifechanging and you need the support of real humans around you who have done it for themselves, and to learn from them. What you do not need is conmen selling you their lying machines to do a job we have been doing since our beginnings.

Um, if an LLMs's tendancy to lie and cheat isn't something that can be stopped, maybe this isn't a great product to incorporate at every level of our professional and personal lives?

Someone should ask Starmer and Mahmood whether they think the Kindertransport, for example, should have been a return ticket. Whether Alf Dubs, rather than becoming a Labour MP and now Lord, ought to have been sent back with his family to Czechoslovakia once it was liberated from German rule.
This contribution to the volume of human misery is yet another policy from Labour based on a false premise, in this case that refugees are overly attracted to Britain. It will increase bureaucratic limbo, thus making worse the problem of "cohesion" it purports to solve.

Meanwhile, data centers are sucking up communities’ water and electricity.
