'As a patient I would rather have a good nurse than a good physician. A physician gives his blessing, the surgeon does the operation - but it is the nurse who does the work.'

Sir Henry Souttar. No. 1 Belgian Field Hospital, Antwerp. 1915.

I turned up in an Oxford reel again.
Potentially threatening caption.
Screenshot from an Instagram reel.
I'm stood behind ornate gates wearing a suit, bowler hat and resting on an umbrella, my moustache is visible.

Very lucky to meet the Maori delegation yesterday and be a part of this in a little way*.

I had the most fantastic time presenting my paper ''Wykud spyritus þat wonon in þat wylde place': Folk Horror in Middle English Sermon Exempla' at @standrewsenglish.bsky.social. I couldn't have asked for a warmer audience with more interesting questions, what a wonderful place!

Love following the progress on this project, it's so interesting!

Anyway, I can't think of a way to round this off, it's been a heavy few months. So I'll just say this:

Take your sick days when you're sick, take the day off when you need the day off, and do your documentation as you never know when it will be used to apply legal context to a Bluesky post.

End.

A colleague on duty last night sent me this. The system really has let me down over the past 18 months, and I will not let this lie, because I want to be there for people like the colleague who wrote this anonymous message, because those who mattered have stepped up and been there for me.

Message on the ICU 'Appreciation Station' reads:

'Rob, you're truly amazing, and sometimes we forget to thank people like you because your kindness and support feel like second nature. So many times I've seen you create quiet moments to guide and support new starters. If I needed help (a chat or patient care), you're the first person I would turn to. Your compassionate listening, wise advice, amazing patient care and hilarious emails make such a difference, thank you for it all!'

I didn't even receive an email from the Trust - aside from those I had actively sought out and engaged. I cleaned my wounds, had a cup of tea and went back to work.

NHS Trusts regularly broadcast their 'Zero Tolerance' stance on violence and aggression, usually followed by descriptions of how nursing staff will ultimately have brought it on themselves due to lack of completed e-learning.
All the police involved with this case received commendations

HR in particular had demanded I take the leave to attend court in November as unpaid, arguing I was attending as a private citizen and not as an official Trust representative (?),and this weekend despite a formal meeting with police today, refused to allow a 'non-medical' absence.

My department and my colleagues both nursing and medical have been nothing but supportive. However the 'system' let me down. At no point did I receive acknowledgement of myself or the event (mentioned in national news) from any member of senior management, no support from legal services.

This week I was informed that the Crown Prosecution Service had made a 'very difficult decision' to no longer pursue conviction on my charge of 'Assault on an Emergency Worker'. Though King will remain as charged and it will 'lie on file', the sentence handed down in August being sufficient.

Amongst a number of charges against the patient, mine was 'severed' by the defence as a separate event. After being on standby in April this year, it was again adjourned until November. In August, Jason King stood trial and was sentenced for the other offences.

Indulge me with a thread 🧵
Last year, a patient attacked me on ICU, they were detained by the police at the time following a frenzied incident with a crossbow.
It upset me, it helped that I wrote an article about it for the @nursingtimes.bsky.social

Me, stood before a patient sustained by every mechanical medical intervention we can provide, as a relative speaks at length telling me how they hate the NHS because of one interaction with a GP receptionist in 1982.

We've been examining portraits in our collections, especially this one of Adeline Cable (1864–1944) pioneering nurse who served during the Boer War in South Africa. In 1907 she became Matron of Salisbury Infirmary, a position she held for 18 years, salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/adeline-cable/

After a year in career development purgatory due to factors rather out of my control (being attacked at work lmao) I'm finally signed off as an independent ICU Coordinator. In celebration this current night shift is absolute carnage.
