“New College’s total spending in 2020–2021 was $53,232,164, according to the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the state’s university system. Four years later, that figure swelled to $93,043,119 — an increase of about 75%” ftw.usatoday.com/story/news/e...

As soon as I saw the headline, I had a pretty good guess who wrote it. Hartocollis is the go-to reporter to restore the reputation of campus conservatives. She led the Times campaign to push out Claudine Gay at Harvard, which was initiated by New College trustee Chris Rufo.

New College is a DeSantis pet project, a Potemkin Campus that must be made real at any cost. While the NY Times notes it is the most expensive in the state, it does not tell readers what an extraordinary outlier it is. Freedom isn’t free, and a right-wing campus makeover is very expensive it seems.

The Times interviews and quotes the university president, who says things like the old New College “was ‘a little Club Med' for people who were all ideologically the same." He is only identified as a former state education commissioner. This leaves out a lot. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-nyt-re...

The Times only quotes current students & faculty on the record, who are not so critical. Which sort of makes sense if selected into campus or don't want to be fired.
Nothing from former faculty/students or off-the-record. A recent Inside Higher Ed piece quoted current faculty with a different view:

It is not just what is happening at New College: discussion of the broader Florida environment of limiting freedom to teach and learn...is just not discussed. No mention of the Stop WOKE Act or other educational gag orders. No mention that the online right now veto which faculty leaders are selected

The reporter, Anemona Hartocollis, argues that things are not so bad. Students are studying the Odyssey! She uncritically shares the views of the college President about the need for campus debate. This is yadayadayadaing an ideological purge. Here are things that are not mentioned:

This should be a huge scandal, right? If the media is going to lose it's collective shit over Hunter Biden's pardon, I would think that Trump selling pardons to rich convicted felons for $6 million a pop should register as more than a blip (if mentioned at all) in the news.

Corruption so pungent, it wafts right off the page:

Lobbyists who do pardon deals “say their going rate is $1 million. Pardon-seekers have offered some lobbyists close to the president success fees of as much as $6 million if they can close the deal.”

I'm disgusted that this rape case is being presented as new when 1) the documents have been public for a decade 2) when people like me would criticize Garland's DOJ for not pursuing Trump and Epstein, the same people hyping it now called us liars and conspiracy theorists. It's sickening to witness.
