Neither do I. But your comment is similar to the attitude I encountered from many of my compatriots and bosses back on TNO.

The ones who stood up to him are succeeding, while those that concede to him have only made their positions worse. Worth thinking about.

Does this really apply in this situation, however? What we are dealing with is a president who is unpopular with the broad public, but has a death grip on his party and is popular with the party base. What would have happened if Truss had been as popular with Tories as Trump is with the GOP?

Yeah, like we very well could solve many of these problems, that just requires one party to give enough of a shit to stop him, and for one branch of government to give enough of a shit to govern.

The good news is he keeps recording himself saying this stupid, cowardly shit to ghouls like Ben Shapiro and Steve Bannon, so his primary opponents will have a bottomless well of attack ad material to use against him.

Newsom would be a catastrophic president, but there's way too high a chance he gets to be president regardless.
January 17, 2026 at 11:52 PM
Newsom is a man who could very well win the presidency but who is far too weak and feckless to be allowed to win the presidency. And contrary to the groupthink on here, he is not all that unpopular and I don't think he is as liable to collapse in the primary as people suspect.

I cannot think of an election since at least 1892 in which I would be tempted to vote for the Republican candidate had I been alive.

I knew a girl in high school whose family fled to America because they didn't like Putin. I guess I didn't really know her politics beyond that, but she seemed nice enough and at least based on that I assume she was not a Putinist.

I re-watched it relatively recently. It is quite good and my dad and I both enjoyed it a lot, so I guess the answer is "yes, it does.'

Man I live in this state and I'm embarrassed that I know as little about the gubernatorial primary as I do. I'm still trying to figure out who I should vote (and perhaps even campaign/phonebank) for.

It's partly why, post-Thermostatic Spiral Hell, this neo-MAGA slightly more moderate national conservative project might be what comes out on top. We should be extremely wary of Rubio and Haley and their ilk in the future.
January 17, 2026 at 9:14 PM
My elderly relatives on my dad's side of the family lamented having to vote Harris and said they would prefer Nikki Haley. I suspect they are not the only ones. A Haley or Rubio-led neo-MAGA GOP, a "MAGA Thermidor," will be able to win them back and thus take power.
