What if, in the spirit of accountability, I took a bunch of abandoned and half-completed songs and stuck 'em up on SoundCloud for you to see how I spent my 2025 in music?

Some family news: RB founding guitarist and friend-of-the-band Michael Mann is facing pancreatic cancer.

Mike was hugely important to us when we were first building our repertoire, writing originals, and recording demos. We owe him a lot, and now we have a chance to help him out in turn.

This U2 cover I made during lockdown has been getting a bunch of plays and likes over the last month or so. Maybe an algorithmic push of some kind. If you want to hear for yourself what the fuss is all about, give a listen. And if you're inclined, the IRC could still use your help.

NOW IT CAN BE TOLD: I have a piece in the new issue of NonBinary Review from @zoeticpress.bsky.social, part of a line-up of thirty creators from all over the world, on the theme "Erased from History." Buy it here for just five beans!
NonBinary Review Issue #42: Erased From History — Zoetic Press
What we know of history is likely a very small, highly curated set of stories, many of which are only extrapolations from archeological information. It’s the visible tip of the historical iceberg. Joi...

Maybe I've been listening to music *as a musician* for too long, but man, I CANNOT understand the psychology of people who make requests at bar gigs. You can plainly see that we do not have a horn section; so why in God's name would you request "Uptown Funk"?

🧵about the goals we set ourselves, and about how we fail to recognize -- or worse, dismiss -- our own accomplishments
Something else contributing to my restlessness (he said, waiting for the butter to met) is that I set myself an annual goal of writing and recording ten new songs and here it is nearly November and I haven't recorded a single one -- except I wrote an entire film score, twelve cues!

Many happy returns to my left-hand man, utility infielder Jeff Haynes, bringing texture to the band with harmony vocals, third guitar, and miscellaneous percussion. The straw that stirs the drink.

Said it before, I'll say it again: The worst part about making music is dealing with musicians.

I've been very lucky in my choice of bandmates this time around, but it seems like every time I reach out of my immediate circle, it's flakes, tryhards, and creeps all the way down.

Still thinking about this, and about the alleged "stories behind" great songs, and I've got to say: The idea that, say, Jimi Hendrix wrote "The Wind Cries Mary" after a fight with a girlfriend named Mary that ended with him sweeping up broken crockery -- it sounds like horseshit on its face.
Seems like a good idea to establish clear lines of division between who you are in public and who you are when no one else is looking, to me

Stage lights are a great invention because they let me play an entire three-set show with sunglasses on, which I do mostly so that the audience won't notice that my eyes are closed most of the time

Accidentally called our two lead guitarists "The Swagger Twins" out loud onstage again

Conditioning audiences to assume that songwriting is a diary exercise is also a net negative because listeners start to lose their ability to discern when the narrator is a character
Man, I just don't know. Relentlessly mining your personal life for material may be good for your art, but it's going to play hell with your personal life. And when you can't look your spouse in the eye at breakfast, it brings home that nobody is an artist 24x7.
