The week following winter solstice is ideal for bidding farewell to everything keeping you in the dark.
Ask how you can prepare to shine as the days lengthen again. What can you release? How can you spread more light in this struggling, suffering world?
A Radiant Stillness
The week between Christmas and New Year’s affords us a precious grace period.

I’m at that point in a virus’s cycle where I am uproariously grateful to be able to smell or taste anything. Still coughing up the worst shit, blowing my nose every 2 minutes, wracked with body-aches. But I CAN TASTE MY SOUP AGAIN.

We are such a transactional society that we even treat the divine like a spiritual ATM whose existence is confirmed only by the delivery of exactly what we request. What if we instead embraced the divine as an omnipresence that holds us no matter what illusions of separation we suffer?

Bowen Yang leaving SNL mid-season simply may stem from it being his time but the show has been hemorrhaging searingly talented people of color/queers for the last 3 years. The cult of Lorne is strong: no one will publicly badmouth him but something is clearly afoot over there.

A little taken aback by just how good the new Knives Out movie is. Soulful, stricken, and significantly less twee while still offering clever sidebars. A perfect cap to this sorrowful year.

My instinct about why I Love LA is so upsetting to watch is that it’s not just that the characters are garbage people. It’s that most of the actors are also working with zero moral barometer. It’s palpable.

Trump has normalized many previously unforgivable transgressions, not least of which are micro-aggressions that are hideously on the nose. To wit: Pantone’s color of the year being….white.

tonight’s supermoon is Merry Prankster energy—perfect for holidazing and holidating; tailor-made for confessing your crush and requesting that raise. It’s been a cruel, charmless year, so why not lean into the Muppet magic? Just pack extra batteries; supermoons drain all resources but love.

I wended my way home in today’s freezing rain, all agog to make a bolstering curried split pea soup. Instead I found 1/2 cup of yellow split peas, 1/2 cup of red lentils. Ok to use them together, or will it be too oddbot given the varied cooking times? The weather’s too cruddy to venture out again.

I woke today thinking about my deceased professor Eleanor Salotto. I’ve learned to pay attention to when she shows up. Here’s the Indiewire essay I wrote about why. It’s also about Mia Hanson-Love, and her extraordinary film The Father of My Children. www.indiewire.com/news/general...

This week's Ruby Report has zero magic unless you count cinema as magic, which I definitely do. It's a highly subjective viewing list for the holidazed. Also! the ritual I created after accepting TG's forced togetherness doesn't work for my nervous system. therubyreport.substack.com/p/metaphysic...

More love needs to be directed toward the Key & Peale movie Keanu. It broke out Tiffany Haddish, made the best cinematic use to date of Will Forte, celebrates interspecies love and, uh, created a new movie genre: permakittenromcomactionthriller. We need more of them, btw.

Unpopular opinion I’m slipping in now: I loved Diane Keaton but after 1985 i think she mostly made movies to finance her other projects bc they were mostly commercial flytraps

People mag is constantly undervalued because the majority of its pages are dedicated to female-coded interests (celebs, shopping, true crime). They don't crave or need political access to exist & so are free to speak truth to power. One of the few outlets to cover Project 2025 with any seriousness.
So what does it say about the state of the 🇺🇸 Press Corps that Trump sticking his finger in a reporter’s face and shouting “Quiet, Piggy!” at her was broken by @peoplemag.bsky.social?

I’m a huge SNL nerd, but this mostly white new cast is tough. This week featured an-otherwise endearing music video—“I Miss My Ex’s Dad—but altho we see dad Glenn Powell’s daughter, we don’t see dad Keenan Thompson’s. Why? Bc there are literally no Black women left on SNL. youtu.be/IYmSuZHDTdg?...
