Hello poets & @thebrokenspine.co.uk
- for this week's #LiftToTheSky I'd like to call out Melanie Green’s A Long, Wide Stretch of Calm

At the Edge of a Lake
“At the shore / of silence— / what becomes / and unbecomes”

The Luster of Silence
“in afternoon’s / echo of lights.”

A #LiftToTheSky for this wonder-filled & venerable anthology. Choice moments so far: "...the other hand fingered the pistol.  My asshole / dropped out / and crawled all the way back to El Paso" (Paul Blackburn); "Everything is water / if you look long enough" (Robert Creeley) ❤️

#Submissions are now open for #Verdigris: #PoetryOfDecay.

If #LiftToTheSky is about rising, Verdigris is about falling — splendour unravelled, glamour undone.

Open all September:

I was #sane
When I was 3 or 4

Now I’m ten times that
My mind a puzzle

What is there to understand?
The medicine gave me a hand

A #LiftToTheSky to my irl friend and coworker Benjamin (@happilybearded.bsky.social)! Benjamin posts original haiku and sports commentary - and sometimes some full-length original poetry, which he has recently started publishing. He's a cool person and 100% worth a follow. 😊

For this weeks #LiftToTheSky with @thebrokenspine.co.uk and @alanparrywriter.co.uk I'm recommending Virgil by Steve Orlando, J.D Faith, Chris Beckett, and Thomas Mauer. A 'queersploitation revenge tale' set in Jamaica. This graphic novel combines tense action, emotiinal nuance and beautiful visuals.

I would love to #lifttothesky today my 🤩 friend & poet @sarahraybould.bsky.social … we went to med school together but I feel it is in the last few years with @bethosmond.bsky.social over poetry/medicine/creativity that we have truly connected in our a great little support trio.
Amazing poet 🙌🎉📣

This week I want to #LiftToTheSky poet Brian Patten, who died September 29th; not so much for his poetry but this quote from him in a newspaper obituary, which goes to the heart of why we come together every week for #PoemsAbout #PromptCombo and others.

Brain Patten, Poet, 1946-2025

Writing poetry was a kind of therapy
for him. “You think about things which
are in you and sensations that are going
through you and if you understand them
you can grow in that knowledge. That
is what poems are for”.

For welding intellect, scholarship & the lived-in life through ingenious, blunt and witty scansion to the authentically demotic, my #LiftToTheSky goes to that great, now late, poet Tony Harrison RIP...

Hello #poetrycommunity A bit late for today’s #LiftToTheSky but hope it still counts. I’ve just learnt of the death of Kathy Galloway who I came across via Lapidus Scotland. She had many strings to her bow, including poetry. Most of her work has a spiritual bent but there are universal elements too.

I've missed a couple of recent prompts as I've been away. Here's a relatively quick write based on a real artifact that I've seen scare the living daylights out of numerous people. For @alanparrywriter.co.uk and #PromptCombo #mannequin

Big thanks for last week’s fierce drops on #PoemsAbout. Next up: #ImperfectMe — bruised reflections, warped mirrors, un-Photoshopped truths. The new theme starts this Friday. Sign up for prompts: shorturl.at/0Xm7A Use Alt Text. Tag #PoemsAbout or get lost in the feed.
An ornate antique mirror with a heavily tarnished and speckled surface, reflecting a faint, distorted background. The frame is baroque-style, featuring elaborate gold and black detailing with a sculpted lion's face at the top. In the top left is The Broken Spine logo shaped like a fountain pen nib. The website "@thebrokenspine.co.uk" is written in white at the top right. At the bottom right, bold white text reads: "Read Repost Reply #POEMSABOUT #IMPERFECTME".
