Trying to forecast the future is prone to uncertainty, though I am probably closer to the alarmist end of the spectrum.
This article is most useful in highlighting the dismissals of such warnings. Big question is why? Normalcy bias? Not being vulnerable?

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

For too long, presidents of both parties have claimed the authority to carry about extrajudicial killings under the guise of "national security" without any meaningful oversight from Congress or the courts.

Our leaders must chart a different course and stop President Trump's illegal boat strikes.

Brilliant. Every cat owner knows the triggers. I used to do this half-whistle noise that got our two running. Even though they both left us this year, whenever I whistle anything, I still expect to hear the thud of them jumping off whatever they were sat on, and the expectant pad into the kitchen.

Things out there are cruel and terrible, but here, have a kitty responding to the sound of the lid on his treat cup.

Thank you for all the good wishes, friends. It's uncomfortably cold in Iowa right now, but all your cuddles, treats, and scritches have been delivered and received with joy.
