🤰$5K for having a baby? That’s cute.

Giving birth (with insurance) costs an average of $19K, with women paying $3K out of pocket. 💸

Caring for an infant in the first year costs $10-23K. 💰💰💰

One consequence of tolerating pseudoscience is that people die when its legitimatization becomes baked into our culture, health care systems, and institutions.

The more I think about this, the funnier it gets.

Imagine proclaiming that academia is broken and journals are dead, but your new model is just getting a bunch of your mates to publish their garbage preprints that no one else will accept in exchange for $1000 a pop.
There's "being wrong in early in a pandemic" wrong and then there's "doubling down over and over again until you find yourself in bed with RFK Jr. and founding a whole-ass journal to discredit all of academic publishing along with all of medicine" wrong.

Outside of USAID headquarters, Senator Brian Schatz:

"If you want to change an agency, introduce a bill and pass a law. You cannot wave away an agency that you don't like or that you disagree with by executive order, or by literally storming into the building and taking over the servers."

We are still learning about all the webpages that have been taken down, but they include: contraception and reproductive rights, STI treatment guidelines, youth risk behavior survey data, CDC's health education analysis tool, resources for the LGBTQ community, and intimate partner violence. 💔

The CDC has removed data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and health disparities from their website.

Pages removed include:
- Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System
- Social Vulnerability Index
- Efforts to Address Racism as a Fundamental Driver of Health Disparities

Told my colleagues. They are still under the impression it's just for a short period of time until the new administration reviews each topic...

Banging my head on the wall.
From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

RFK Jr. is not "questioning science"--he is lying about clinical trials, he is lying about the mountains of *reproducible* available data, and he is lying about safety and efficacy findings.
"I'm just asking questions" is a lazy and cheap way to grab people's emotions and attention.

RFK Jr. should know that vaccines have the most rigorous safety testing possible, because they are administered to an otherwise healthy population. He’s claiming otherwise, repeatedly, and he’s wrong.

1/ Thank you to @pocan.house.gov for hosting a town hall in Madison. I work in public health and tried to remain hopeful after the election. I was wrong to assume things wouldn't change on day one.

RFK Jr. appears to be getting even more squirmy than usual as Senator Warner asks how the federal funding freeze helps all of the people RFK Jr. is faux-crying about, and how suspending NIH funding helps people. RFK Jr. cannot or will not answer.

Another BINGO! RFK Jr pedaled racist bullshit about COVID claiming Jews and Chinese engineered it. Claimed Lyme disease was a bioweapon.

Measles IS deadly. The fact that RFK Jr. cannot simply say yes to this question but rather ramble through epidemiological data and tell a revisionist history of his time in Samoa tells you everything you need to know.

Listening to the RFK jr confirmation hearing on CSPAN. He talks a good talk but it's still lip service. He's demonstrated he's anti-vax despite saying otherwise. He talks about the importance of a healthy diet but hasn't mentioned the consequences of removing free school lunches and meals on wheels.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
