I think that her being a white woman "mouthing off" to him is part of the trigger. He already likely felt "disrespected" by her wife earlier. To me, this explains some white people's "she had it coming" attitude. How DARE a white woman not submit to his authority? He had to put her in her place.

The Samaritans are actually growing in numbers, and their elders have done a tremendous amount of work to keep Samaritanism alive!
I meant to come back to this to affirm it. The same thing happens regularly with Samaritans who still (barely) exist. Any group mentioned in the Christian Bible is just a prop. It's exacerbated by how rarely Christians personally encounter living Jews (or NAs meeting Indigenous Americans)...
