The implicit assumption that white rural voters are the *real* voice of the masses, while the people who live around the major population centers (ie the majority of the country) are out of touch degenerates remains an unshakable feature of punditry. Truly nasty work

The central lie — the key dishonesty — of modern conservatism is that being judgmental about the ethnicity or language or culture of the person next door is fine and acceptable, but being judgmental of that attitude is elitist and arrogant and closed-minded. What vapid bullshit.

It’s true that these incidents appear in the news section, but they’re rarely collected into trend pieces or framed by the media as part of a single, urgent story.

Compare this to ‘campus free speech,’ which had magazine covers, entire verticals and dedicated beat reporters.
