This makes me want to revisit my Bombadil/Santa theory.
a lot of people don't realize that Christmas carols and traditions are actually folk memories of suppressed pre-Christian events, namely the end of the Third Age and the Fall of Sauron.

I really wish someone with a nose ring would sharply tell Nate Silver that it’s important to talk as much as possible, so he would in reaction absolutely shut the fuck up forever

Requiring temporary visitors to surrender five years of social media to the U.S. sends the message that the American commitment to free speech is pretense. This simply is not the behavior of a country confident in its freedoms.

It's a threat to free speech around the world and must be opposed.
Foreign tourists could be required to disclose 5 years of social media histories under Trump administration plan
The Customs and Border Protection proposal would apply even to countries that don't require visas to enter.

Rachel Levine is a lifelong public servant who bravely navigated the pandemic on behalf of all Pennsylvanians. She should be honored, not attacked and belittled. Truly unconscionable stuff.
HHS changed the name of transgender health leader on her official portrait

Heritage is just cartoonishly evil. Just the worst scum on the face of the planet.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

The problem with most of Yglesias’s advice for Democrats is that Republicans do the opposite and win all the time. So it’s either bad advice or evidence of an asymmetric playing field, which he never addresses.
My working hypothesis is that the reason Matt Yglesias was booed off of Bluesky isn’t because Bluesky is too leftist or too toxic.

It’s because he sucks.

The central lie — the key dishonesty — of modern conservatism is that being judgmental about the ethnicity or language or culture of the person next door is fine and acceptable, but being judgmental of that attitude is elitist and arrogant and closed-minded. What vapid bullshit.

It’s true that these incidents appear in the news section, but they’re rarely collected into trend pieces or framed by the media as part of a single, urgent story.

Compare this to ‘campus free speech,’ which had magazine covers, entire verticals and dedicated beat reporters.
