1️⃣ Language that would prevent GAI from producing editorial work
2️⃣ A requirement that AI-generated content be clearly labeled and reviewed by human editors

It's simple — @propublica.org workers should not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Our contract proposal specifically says that generative artificial intelligence ("GAI") should not be used to replace employees. Management struck out this entire section in their response to our proposal.

I know following rules on a plane doesn’t matter in the US because we’ve bottomed out as a society, but my row mate was unhinged enough to pull down his tray table and open his laptop right when we started accelerating for take off… to use Slack

Journalists I beg of you — please do not again fall into the trap of thinking any social media site is representative of a majority of Americans or the American electorate

Most of them were *never* on Twitter, and even less of them are here

On the eve of the Dodgers winning the World Series 😉, LA Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez introduced a resolution urging Metro to officially reject the Dodger Stadium gondola project.

It's signed by representatives of CD1, CD14, and CD13, all districts directly impacted by Dodger Stadium traffic

The Venn diagram of journalists mad when their stories get ripped off and reposted without credit and journalists who use Gen AI tools built with stolen and unlicensed art to create visuals for their stories is the shape of hypocrisy.

if you engage in this sort of AI Anthropomorphism in the pages of a prominent media organization (or anywhere else) you are loudly advertising that you don't know how this technology actually works

I cannot tell you how many tech journalists at prominent media organizations do not understand this
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Journalism that fails to infuse a historically informed lens is akin to covering the smoke but never asking who lit the fire. History-centered journalism should be the framework within every newsroom.

Actual media people should probably push back against Explainers whose whole beat is “Telling well-off white Americans they don’t have to change anything: it is the Black and leftist critics on social media who are to blame.” I just see no evidence that it’s a good use of *my* time.
