Welcome new followers!

I’ve been described as a border collie with opposable thumbs who can do math (& swears a lot). I post about many things, including astrophysics, other sciences, politics, stuff I’ve made, teaching, complaints, occasional medieval history, Irish stuff, NYC, travel, bears…

I asked a friend who works for the city if they had opinions on these housing related ballot initiatives and they said YES and then asked if I had 30 minutes free for them to get into it 😮‍💨
saavikford.bsky.social
And can they be set up to send particularly snarky responses to emails addressed to me, ‘Dear Mr. Ford’???

Oops, sorry, the Salient’s staff need the history lessons…

‘Rootless cosmopolitanism’ didn’t trip any alarm bells, huh? I’m gonna say Harvard Crimson’s staff need some remedial history lessons…

Ooh, always good to have that prepared. Will keep it in mind on the off chance I ever get to yell at them!!

the most delightful version of logging on to see what news you've missed
Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

To which Ms O'Neill replied that she had 200 text messages that suggested he had.

A fascinating read.

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

There is a line around this building to get to the line entrance to wait to get into this job fair.

At the airport. For airport jobs.

So… Łink’s account is permabanned from Bluesky’s appview, but also gets banned from:

WhiteWind
Skylight
Bluescreen
Flashes

Basically all ATproto apps/projects?

WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF THIS PROJECT THEN?

here at the Katie Tightpussy School of Optics we like to stress that Optics Matter. one example of this is that even if link's post is actionable (which is debatable but besides the point), an immediate perma of a vocal critic is a bad look, especially when you're already being accused of racism etc

Unfortunate update: Link reached out to BlueSky and got email back now on reason.

His appeal is denied. He will remain permanently banned on BlueSky’s side.

Here are the screenshots he just sent me as of 8:22 AM EST(my time)
A screenshot of an email from the Bluesky Moderation Team with the subject line “Bluesky Account Behavior” sent at 22:15. The email states that a Bluesky account controlled by the recipient, with the handle @spacelawshitpost.me, posted a reply with an image where the alt text reads: Charlie Kirk sitting in a white T-shirt that says “Freedom.” A negative consequence follows. The email indicates this post violates Community Guidelines regarding violent or threatening speech, specifically listing threats of violence or physical harm against individuals, groups, institutions, or the general public, and incitement of self-harm or suicide. A screenshot of an email continuation from the Bluesky Moderation Team displaying a bulleted list of Community Guidelines violations. The first bullet point describes threats of violence or physical harm as including threats or encouragement of violence against individuals, groups, institutions, or the general public. The second bullet point defines incitement of self-harm or suicide as content that encourages self-harm or suicide. The third bullet point explains wishes of harm as expressions of a desire for harm directed at a specific person or group. Below the bullets, a paragraph states that users may not use Bluesky to break the law or cause harm to others and that all users must be treated with respect. The next paragraph informs the recipient that as a result of these violations, your account has been taken down. A closing paragraph thanks the user for doing their part to keep Bluesky a welcoming and empowering place for all users and instructs them to email moderation@blueskyweb.xyz if they have questions or wish to appeal the decision. The email ends with the signature Bluesky Moderation Team. A screenshot of an email reply from a user with the initials AJ and profile picture to the Bluesky Moderation Team, sent at 08:01 with the subject line Re: Bluesky Account Behavior. The email states the user wants to appeal the decision, asserting there was no threatening or violent connotation behind their use of the image. The user explains that the Charlie Kirk post is not a threat but rather a reaction meme expressing disappointment, with no threat made and no incitement of violence. The user mentions they have attached multiple examples and explanations, specifically 12 images in total, demonstrating the use of the image as a reaction meme. Below this text is a blue hyperlink to a Bluesky post URL. At the bottom of the screenshot is an embedded image showing a Bluesky post from a user with the handle @britculpsapp.bsky.social with several emoji reactions and a repost indicator showing Bluesky Elder. Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to appeal the takedown of your account on Bluesky. We have carefully reviewed your case, including the information you provided and the activity that led to the suspension of your account.

After investigating, we have determined that your account activity was in violation of our community guidelines, specifically promoting hateful content or being disruptive to other users. We take these guidelines seriously to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all our users.

As a result, we regret to inform you that your appeal has been denied, and your account will remain suspended. This decision is final and cannot be reversed. We understand that this may be disappointing news, but we must prioritize the well-being of our community and maintain a consistent enforcement of our policies. Oh I wholeheartedly agree that Jay’s ‘just diy it’ is nonsense! But BlackSky seems very close to actually doing it, and is accessible to non-Black folk, which a lot of folks are not aware of.
saavikford.bsky.social
This is not my understanding, based on discussions on here, bc an independent appview can ignore the ban flag. But I am not a dev.
saavikford.bsky.social
Fair. You’re correct there’s no instant fix.
saavikford.bsky.social
And moving to BlackSky doesn’t lose connection to folks here, as far as I understand it.
saavikford.bsky.social
It doesn’t help immediately, but if enough of us move & donate, they can stand up an independent AppView & we can at least unban Link.

During hyperphagia, bears can spend 22 hours per day foraging.

The sweet scent of wind-fallen apples attracts them, which is why if you live in bear country, it's essential to remove fallen apples daily.

Your daily moment of zen:

Rescued bear cubs at the Kilham Bear Center in New Hampshire are given a donated pile of apples & acorns every year to fatten up before their first hibernation.

Kilham is focused on rehab & release, run by competent rehab experts.

So @spacelawshitpost.me aka Link got banned. I just got text message.

So yeah. We stop saying things are accidents now?

Link of all people?

Apparently Jay said something to him before taking him down. He didn’t even get a chance to reply.

He sent this image.

This is sad.

You can go through pdsls.dev/at://did:plc... because the PDS data was not taken down, to see if @spacelawshitpost.me did anything against ToS. You wouldn't have the ability to do that if his PDS were bsky pbllc hosted. The community can form its own opinions about Link's posts & whether ban merited.
