After Hurricane Andrew, FEMA inspected the damaged homes and found a simple metal bracket securing the roof to the house made a big difference. Using this, Florida officials adopted some of the toughest building codes for hurricanes, reducing Florida's losses from wind damage by 72% over 10 years.
To help homes survive more intense disasters, FEMA has been developing recommendations for stronger building codes. The Trump Administration has pulled them back.

It was so much work getting into my REU, I can’t imagine how disappointed these students are to have it taken back. I learned so much from my experience, I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.

Living in Oklahoma I’ve spent countless hours on their website. The information on upcoming storm systems is amazingly accurate and saves lives.
Hearing reports that Musk’s cronies are targeting NOAA — infiltrating key systems and locking out career employees.
NOAA is vital for weather forecasting, scientific research and more. Their critical work saves lives.
My team and I are looking into this and we will not stand for it.
