the fact that antifascism has been allowed no institutional expression in this country as fascism has simultaneously been ushered closer and closer to the mainstream is itself the cause of this moment. The misdrawn boundaries around what institutional politics can hold are how we got here

What left? The left has no institutional power or organization here. And it certainly has nothing to do with the fact that majorities of white Americans have been voting Republican since the Civil Rights Act. The fascism has been latent here for decades, when the left said so they got blacklisted

We lost the Republic because the Yglesiases have cushy lives and a lot of money and couldn’t imagine anything interrupting this that they couldn’t forestall with their own obsequiousness

Aside from shattering core state sovereignty, it's saying one state's Guard (TX) is somehow more loyal to the national authority than another's (IL). It's treating the latter as something bordering on hostile, or at least alien. One part of the country and its soldiers are more America than another.

It is the same undercurrent and I would argue that this is the urbanized mirror to what ranchers and farmers have been doing to latino workers for generations. Simply call in la migra when you don’t want to deal with the labor anymore. This time it’s anyone with a complaint about their tenant.
