I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Resharing for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As a survivor, my research and my lived experience are deeply intertwined. IPV/DV are way too common, but it is NOT NORMAL; and I still do my best to find my way even all these many years later. #DVAM #EndGenderBasedViolence

Below is a poem I published in the annual "Purple Poetry Book" sponsored by Turn Around Inc. years ago. (An organization in Baltimore that supports survivors of intimate partner violence.) This was so healing for my own survivor journey. The pen name also holds special meaning. 💜 #IPV #advocacy
Poem that says:

You took it all
You let me fall
Staring at this wall
Heart split open
My gaze is frozen
Mind is empty
You left me
Broken, battered
Nothing else mattered
I can't move
I can't breathe

I didn't see
I didn't know
That you did this
Many times before
I'm not special
Your next level
Now I follow
Helpless
Hopeless
Feeling hollow

Time to stand
My feet will land
I can survive
Somehow still alive
I need to save
Myself, be brave

Then it becomes an adventure of trudging through the messy code! 💃🏼
samschuelstein.bsky.social
Yep, I feel like this is the same way that I don't mind doing laundry. I just hate folding it and then it sits there for a long time becoming gradually more unkempt.
samschuelstein.bsky.social
BUT, this wouldn't stop me from sharing it openly. Haha.

Not going to put myself on blast here... but I am partially (b). My R code is not necessarily unintelligible, to me at least, but certainly messy. 👀 But I do try to clean it up after the battle I survive for each paper analysis. 😂🫠

She will be so missed and well-remembered for all she gave this world. Literally, Sir David Attenborough needs to be protected now at all costs.

Breaking News: Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most revered conservationists, died at 91. Her discoveries in the 1960s about how chimpanzees behaved in the wild broke new ground and represented what was called “one of the Western world’s great scientific achievements.” nyti.ms/42kpGxt

BREAKING

Dr. Jane Goodall has died. She was 91.

It is impossible to sum up the impact she has had on our world and on science in a social media post.

She lived a long and incredible life but I am devastated.

Jane Goodall has died.

She was truly a beacon of light in this world.

I had the good fortune of seeing her speak shortly before COVID arrived. She showed such warmth, compassion, integrity, and intelligence.

Jane, the animals thank you for your selfless work.

Most, if not all of the leaders in that room have served longer than Trump has been involved with "politics." And further, a decent chunk of them for most of Hegseth's life. They were the leaders quietly serving when things were good, and now they are here serving when democracy is under attack.

The professionalism that our most senior military commanders exhibited with their silence today despite repeated attempts by Hegseth & Trump begging them to please clap was encouraging, & should be an example to all troops when they try to exploit them for partisan politics. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Trump to a room of generals: "I've never walked into a room so silent before. Just have a good time. And if you want to applaud, you applaud."

I've come across a variety of people and families as a military spouse, & the most productive disagreements I've had were with people in that environment. As opposed to echo chambers on social media.

Courage doesn't need to be loud or public. It can be doing the work daily, to protect freedom.

That pep rally was disrespectful, wasteful, alarming, and ridiculous. And it's also true that liberal folks on here who demand senior leadership to publicly denounce all of this in the name of courage is very tone deaf. We want people who will uphold the constitution in those positions, not fired.

"They carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power of the things they carried." - Tim O'Brien

I have never served. I am just surrounded by those who are actively serving and who served honorably. I have seen what they sacrifice, and they are brave.

basically everything about this is wrong and horrifying but I'm stuck on the absolute fucking chutzpah you'd need to lecture professional military personnel like this after you personally texted wildly classified war plans to the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic

Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."

Trump: "The ones that are run by radical left Democrats -- what they've done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles. They're very unsafe places & we're gonna straighten them out one by one. This is gonna be a major part for some people in this room. That's a war too. It's war from within"

The headline here is “Hegseth announces changes that will protect domestic abusers in the military.” Even though this is incontestably true, no news organization will use this headline, because telling the truth is deemed impermissible if the truth hurts the right too much
atrupar.com
Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."

The vast percentage of roles in the modern US military are *not* in combat. Who cares if your mechanic can do 100 pushups? If your cook can run a sub-6 minute mile? If your intelligence analyst can deadlift 300 pounds?

And who cares if your Sec of Defense is great at PT if he cannot think or lead?
atrupar.com
Hegseth: "Basic training is being restored to what it should be -- scary, tough, and disciplined. We're empowering drill sergeants to instill healthy fear in new recruits, ensuring that future warfighters are forged ... they can put hands on recruits."
