Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

@mollyschumer.bsky.social if the data is pre SPQR chemistry I would recommend fibertools. If it’s new data then you can use Jasmine from Pacbio, Andrew and I spent a fair amount of time looking at the Jasmine results and they look good. And it will all still work with downstream fibertools commands

Did you know? Revio & Vega include on-instrument 6mA calling for the Fiber-seq chromatin accessibility assay. Thanks to Fiber-seq expert @mrvollger.bsky.social for the thoughtful evaluation and recommendation.

Reagents for the assay are also available from our friends at EpiCypher: bit.ly/42YwGQE

I really appreciated this thoughtful piece about Ta-Nehisi Coates & Ezra Klein. Andrea Pitzer says “lost” folks like Klein “don’t have a clear idea how this moment fits into history and what it is exactly that they’re doing”. [degenerateart.beehiiv.com]
You don’t have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don’t know what your core beliefs are, you’re going to get played.

We are enabling custom panels. PureTarget delivers high depth native DNA and is suited for challenging genes if you want to avoid PCR or where methylation matters. We have enabled high throughput processing with an automation kit and scripts on Hamilton. Learn more - www.pacb.com/technology/p...
PureTarget - PacBio
PureTarget uses the CRISPR-Cas9 system to generate targeted native DNA libraries. This amplification-free approach retains epigenetic signals and has no PCR artifacts or errors.

This announcement is huge. If you live in the US, chances are you have used Quest Diagnostics for some medical test, they serve 1 in 3 American adults every year. It’s incredibly gratifying to work on products with this kind of impact.

🚨Federal judge orders DHS to limit “roving patrols” in Los Angeles.

The judge finds that the evidence shows that DHS officers are racially profiling people to demand their papers, which all sides agree is illegal, and orders DHS to stop those unlawful practices.
What the federal government would have this Court believe—in the face of a mountain of evidence presented in this case—is that none of this is actually happening.
Most of the questions before this Court are fairly simple and non-controversial, and both
sides in this case agree on the answers.
• May the federal government conduct immigration enforcement— even large scale immigration enforcement-in Los Angeles? Yes, it may.
• Do all individuals regardless of immigration status— share in the rights guaranteed by the Fourth and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution? Yes, they do.
• Is it illegal to conduct roving patrols which identify people based upon race alone, aggressively question them, and then detain them without a warrant, without their consent, and without reasonable suspicion that they are without status? Yes, it is.
• Is it unlawful to prevent people from having access to lawyers who can help them in immigration court? Yes, it is.
There are really two questions in controversy that this Court must decide today.
First, are the individuals and organizations who brought this lawsuit likely to succeed in
proving that the federal government is indeed conducting roving patrols without reasonable suspicion and denying access to lawyers? This Court decides—based on all the evidence presented-that they are.
And second, what should be done about it? The individuals and organizations who have brought this lawsuit have made a fairly modest request: that this Court order the federal government to stop.

The Tea Party protests in April 2009 had about a third of a million people involved, and the political media treated it like a game changer for the Obama presidency.

The No Kings rallies were AT LEAST ten times bigger than the Tea Party protests. Will the press keep pretending Trump is popular?
gelliottmorris.com
Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels
"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions
Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

Possible to start to tell a unified story: "Trump is personally too old, crazy, and confused to run things, so at any given time the question is which co-president is in charge. At first it was Musk, & we got the crazy chaotic DOGE era. Then Navarro: a trade war that crashed markets. Now Miller..."
