When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

as a text-based creature in an increasingly video-first world I'd like to be cherished as a sort of charismatic but doomed animal, to be fed treats in my enclosure until I meet my inevitable demise, after which my taxidermied corpse might greet visitors in a lobby somewhere

You know when someone happily shares that they love mysteries or horror or romance or nonfiction or whatever and someone says, “Oh, that? I hate that.” Yeah, don’t be that person. People like different things, but no one likes that person.

The part of George Orwell’s 1984 that everyone forgets is how the music and publishing industries have been replaced by a machine that spits out songs and bad novels “without any human intervention.” The goal is to keep you from ever having to think.

Fiction, especially writing it, makes you PAY ATTENTION to the truth and the bloody realities of the world, even if you're writing about elves. Writers already know this. It's why we're often sad. So, when someone says you shouldn't be focusing on your writing, you can just lol at that person.

I don't pretend to know the science behind it, but it's beyond dispute that coffee and tea taste at least 63% better when you're drinking them from your most cherished mug.

It's been a hell of a long time, but I actually finally hit a point today where I'm able to look at a blinking curser and not panic. Where's the #amwriting community here? I'd love to make some friends and writer buddies.

Part of my January has been organizing and purging my wardrobe to create more storage space. Usually this leaves me feeling nostalgic and unable to part with once beloved items that I haven't worn in years. Now it feels like a chance to give them a second life by donating, and me a new clean space.

Remember that you were raised on stories about hyperindividualistic chosen ones where saving the entire world is the minimum win condition.

It's fine to tune your expectations down from that a smidge. You're not going to dethrone god today but maybe do something nice for your neighbors.

Is 2025 going to be a year of comfort rereads? Escapism via Fantasy, sci fi, and romance? I feel like I've done all of these so far and only seem to be avoiding literary fiction like it's ink is poison.

I'm reading a book right now that makes me feel like the characters are my own friends. It's easy to lose track of time when you feel like your entry reality has shifted to put you in another, softer, world.

I'm a librarian, and I'm getting so tired of explaining to coworkers and family that generative AI is not the solution they think it is.
The amazing part isn’t just the wrong answer, but that the explanation it gives is accurate — and it *simply doesn’t know that 27 is a smaller number than 32.*

Billions of dollars spent to make a black box machine that doesn’t know something elementary school kids know.

Listen, I could tell my therapist that I feel I'm falling behind having read only 9 books so far this month or I could start 2 new completely different books tonight and let the reading spirits guide me.

2025 is going to be yet another year where I unapologetically defend genre fiction with my whole chest.
