Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I'd be much more sympathetic to the REF culture warriors if they could (a) tell me if culture is a cause or effect, and (b) show some evidence of having read the extensive academic research on how organisations work.

Dan Wang's "Breakneck: China's quest to engineer the future" is as good as people say.

Useful to read it with Dunkelman's "Why Nothing Works". Which is also really good on the US

And for background Paul Sabin's "Public Citizens" is a wonderful history of changes in the US.

What is your typical ratio of bookmarks to books? Because you own a large number of books... 🤔

Just because you don't have obvious timetabled classroom hours does not mean that you are free of teaching. This is the worst part of the UK job: The teaching never goes away! I am still marking resits of students whose last lecture was April 2024 (because of MitCirc, trailing, etc). Awful system.

No judgment! Yes, building insurance. If the boiler blows up, your building insurance won't pay out if you can't prove good state of repair.

Absolutely get the service! Not least because if there is an accident and you haven't had it within 12 months, your insurance can refuse to pay.

Despite our pushing as editors, T&F won't reveal its other licensing agreements, or state clearly how they'll ensure proper attribution if content ends up in language models (and it is)

Journal publishers *are* bundling your papers up in "data licensing agreements" for big tech companies to use for AI model training. Our publisher, T&F, got £75m from Microsoft for that last year alone.

And WHAT a miserable person she is, too! Self-centered, self-aggrandizing. Where is this coming from?
sarahotner.bsky.social
100% called it. What is WRONG with these people?!
sarahotner.bsky.social
OK actually, she's a miserable person, and I am GLAD they didn't get married. FFS!
