Turns out those initials are actually MD and the artist is UK illustrator Mark Duffin, who also did the Atari ST box art for Tempest, though Mark confirmed for OVGA that neither original painting was ever returned. Mark said both were a rush and had to be done overnight!

6) Cozy SFF works best when there's a bit of contrasting spikiness. Sure a pure idyll is nice, but having some psychological depth, some challenge, a hint of a not completely benevolent world makes the day to day niceness stand out in relief. Not universally so, but the genre tends bland w/o that.
