When Amazon launched in 1995, there were 5,500 indie bookshops in the U.S., with 7,000 locations. By May of 2023, that number had decreased to 2,185 indies & 2,599 locations.

When you purchase audiobooks via Libro.fm vs. Audible, you directly support indie bookshops. Let's make that number grow ❤️

Since Canadians are encouraging each other to buy Canadian authors: may I suggest you seek out Victoria Sees It by Carrie Jenkins, a mind-bending novel & one of my favorites in 2021. I got an ARC by some glitch and am still annoyed it never got a U.S. release #BookSky hazlitt.net/feature/not-...
'This is Not a Book That is Enthusiastic About Humanity': An Interview with Carrie Jenkins | Hazlitt
Talking to the author of Victoria Sees It about books as mirrors, institutional violence in the academy, and misanthropy.

Congratulations @marthasjones.bsky.social for an AMAZING review of the Trouble of Color. It's imperative that we support Black history by Black scholars in this moment, and the Trouble of Color reminds us that the impulse to deny, misname, and erase our history isn't new. Pick it up today!

Fellow book lovers! There is a better way to buy our books than Amazon. Instead of putting $ in Bezos' pocket, every purchase on @bookshop-org.bsky.social financially supports independent bookstores. You can even select the bookstore you'd like to support.

Today, I found out that the Department of Defense banned the Well-Read Black Girl anthology by Glory Edim. I was one of its contributors.

I'm really hurt right now. So if you have it in you, please buy books by Black women from independent bookstores.

It would be a shame to encourage folks to use banned book lists to do strange things like
-check them out regularly at the library
-request the library order them if they don’t have them
-buy them
-start or support banned book clubs
-organize a banned book kids story time
A real shame

In future generations, when your children and grandchildren look back on this moment, they are not going to ask about the price of eggs. They are going to ask you what you did. Not what you felt. Not what you paid. But what you did. And I want to be able to say I did everything I possibly could.

AOC has them sputtering mad because she’s educating people on constitutional rights. You don’t see them freaking out at Jeffries for talking about egg prices.

AOC is the only elected official who walks into Congress like it’s a battlefield, armed with facts, common sense, and zero patience for BS.

Fearless, sharp, and always ten steps ahead—exactly what politics needs.

And that’s why they are terrified of her!
