New Year a much bigger deal for me than Christmas, but I do have 2 Christmas decisions to make:

1. What fancy meat dish do I want to make just because?
2. Panettone or stollen from PQB?
Publican Quality Bread - Chicago, IL

There are a lot of really horrific examples of “it can always get worse” in world history but I find Sepp Blatter to Gianni Infantino hits just the right note of bleak whimsy.

Bluesky doesn't have the juice because I found out about Steve Cropper's death on Facebook (of all places) and not here.

Visited a neighborhood school our kids would probably attend for kindergarten yesterday, and the principal brought up Bike to School Day as part of their regular presentation so that was nice.

Something that happens a few times a year for me (mostly on the Economist) is I’m reading about China, see a Chinese word written out in pinyin and I have no clue what the word is, then I look up the characters and everything makes 50% more sense.
It's with mixed emotions that I observe "kei" acquire a very specific meaning in English. It just means "light" (as opposed to heavy).

Chinese-character knowers can recognize 軽/輕/轻.

My top 4 albums from 2025. Not the ones I listened to the most—though I did listen to these a lot—but the best ones.

Swirl by Flora Hibberd
Te Whare Tīwekaweka by Marlon Williams
Switcheroo by Gelli Haha
Vendrán Suaves Lluvias by Silvana Estrada

Just went through the 10th anniversary deluxe edition of this. It must be one of the best Brazilian albums from this century.

I especially like Dinossauros (10:52) and Bahia (22:16)

1) genuine life changing moment of my early 20s was realizing I actually didn't have to do this at all. tell the youths

2) I feel like there's a class discussion to be had around the stakes of this kind of decision though
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

I knew dad was way into making paella. Got his pan at the Spanish Table in Seattle (which I just learned has a different name and owners now).

What I didn’t know, he has like 6 Spanish cookbooks

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Sockeye salmon marinated in guajillo adobo. Cooking a whole fillet looks nicer but it’s the same fish. Big hit with the kids (sorry it’s half eaten)

I second this as a great lunch spot. A lot more filling than it looks
82 Kimbap at the Sterling food hall

- fast operations and line management
- fair price ($12-13 for 10 piece roll)
- good spicy bbq kimbap
- filling
- free cup of brothy soup

👍

Renewed my drivers license kinda last minute before it expires. Worst case it’d take a couple hours so took the day off. Actually in and out the door in less than 30 mins.

Just chilling at a cafe now
