What a huge loss. I am so sorry to hear this news. David was a tremendous positive presence across all biomedical science. A once in a generation kind of scientist. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/07/s...

www.latimes.com/obituaries/s... RIP David Baltimore. A true giant of biomedical research. Made so many fundamental discoveries: Reverse transcriptase; NF-kB; Rag genes (among others) Also shut down his lab for a week in 1970 to protest the US invasion of Cambodia.

Good grief, the US National Cancer Institute projects it will fund only one in 25 RO1 grant applications in 2026. This is massively defunding cancer research. Despicable vandalism. www.cancer.gov/grants-train...

❗How can a cancer exploit its environment and still resist treatment?
✅The answer: co-existing malignant subclones.

Let me walk you through our latest study investigating how divergent evolution drives adaptability, aggressiveness, and drug resistance of T cell cancer. 1/🧵

doi.org/10.1158/2159...
Schematic figure showing divergent evolution of malignant subclones and how they migrate to different tissue compartments (blood vs skin), respond differently to extrinsic stimuli such as Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins, and how subclones differ in their intrinsic resistance to anti-cancer drugs.

McCarthyism 2.0: Now with added racism.

Trump wants to purge Chinese students from U.S. universities under the guise of “national security.”

This isn’t defense — it’s discrimination, plain and simple. We stand up for international students.

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

My understanding is she was carrying frog embryos for cancer biology work in her mentor’s lab at Harvard - this is not some espionage ffs!

Given the political views that many Russian expats hold, deporting her back to Russia is inhumane to say the least!

Another example of the current administration’s war on science. Instead of allowing a talented and highly trained scientist to do her job and make discoveries that will benefit human health they are trying to deport her. Shame. 😳😱

The Trump administration intends to deport a Harvard scientist back to Russia, government lawyers told a federal judge on Wednesday. The scientist fled the country in 2022 and fears she will be arrested there over her protest of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

As a former program officer at NSF, I can say that this will have a devastating impact on basic research. The Foundation has set the gold standard for review of scientific merit, driven by the discovery of transformational and innovative ideas.

This keeps getting worse.

I am yet to hear a single republican express any real concern about the impact the cuts to NIH and the abrupt stop in funding by NSF will have on US science and healthcare, let alone see any evidence of “bipartisan” action.

I have to admit, John Oliver outlining exactly what is wrong with HHS cuts and with RFK in great detail, was not what I would have expected. But this is sadly very accurate.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.
