Given the many life transitions over the past couple months I've been comfort re-listening to The Adventure Zone Balance for the nth time. Forgot how much I loved everything about The Stolen Century and especially the conservatory ❤️

Welcome to MRI Training.
Hey. The MRI is basically a really big magnet and by basically I mean it is and we literally never turn it off. It's like really big. Really really big and powerful and The Magnet is always on. We don't turn it off Ever, for any reason. We mean it bro, The Magnet is literally always on. It's crazy strong and will definitely kill you. So don't bring any metal into the MRI room, man. You will fuck up the machine (because The Magnet is always on) and then you will die (again, because The Magnet is always on). Here's some fun questions for you to test your understanding!

1) The ______ is always on.

2) The Magnet is ______ on.

3) How often is The Magnet on?

4) The Magnet is always __.

5) The Magnet is always on. T/F

6) The Magnet is usually on but we know to turn it off for you because you're a very special boy :) T/F

7) My weak fleshy body can survive the wrath of The Magnet. T/F

8) Look at this 500 lbs steel hospital bed, which The Magnet has crumpled into an origami crane. Imagine if that was you.

9) Is The Magnet ever off?

10) Sometimes we turn The Magnet off. T/F

Today marks the completion of my first month at my new job, and during this transition period I have felt a lot like this raccoon

Learning new instruments: fun, amazing, new dimensions of data

Not being an immediate expert at said new instruments: horrible, how could this happen to me
sbuzsaki.bsky.social
A fundamental truth of the lab is that instruments can only answer the questions you ask them. A question for myself, however, is why do I keep managing to ask such bad questions 🙃
sbuzsaki.bsky.social
Oh definitely! I realized my response sounded like I was disagreeing with your initial reply, but I didn't mean it that way. If everybody is on board and aware of what the referral actually consists of, full steam ahead. Whereas in my recent situation neither of those conditions were met haha
sbuzsaki.bsky.social
Appreciate your perspective! I'm all for lifting people up and I know how difficult job searching can be/how important referrals can be, but.. I would think the usual reason referrals are valued is because you do know the person in question and can vouch for their skills haha
sbuzsaki.bsky.social
#chemsky How common is it for people you do not know to try and list you as a reference/referral on an application to your company? Either asking to, or just doing it without asking first? Just happened to me for the first time and it feels... weird

Wish it was reasonable or economical to have an in-home nmr or mass spectrometer. I am normal and can be trusted with a 4T electromagnet

Thanks @plante.bsky.social for championing it on The Besties and being the reason I sought it out!

I don't have capital G Gamer skills, but over the last few weeks I've been picking my way through 1000xResist and man what a gorgeous game to experience. Vibes of Evangelion, the surreal poetry of This is How You Lose the Time War, and just as impossible to explain as Disco Elysium. Hekki grace ❤️

this was the first weekend where I truly didn't have 5 million tasks to do and the joy I felt in booting up a new stardew farm (mostly) guilt free earlier today? incredible.

total synthesis chemists, definitely hardcore widget-ers

[looks at camera] metholology types? they got some spreadsheet going on

the central divide in science is whether at the end of your phd program you are expected to produce a little widget or a spreadsheet. all empirical disciplines can be classified along the spreadsheet-widget axis.

This is incredibly cool: if you search for a condition that’s affected your family, the site returns stats on how much NIH has done for that disease, *and* a contact form for reaching out to tell your Members of Congress why you want to see them defend NIH.

Pass it on!

Nothing could be more fitting than defending on the same day as Austin (@austinjacious.bsky.social), my forever Rice cohort twin. We will continue to point out it was not intentional (which is true!) but it is quite thematically appropriate regardless. :')

#PhDone !!! Very happy to say that (yesterday) I successfully defended my thesis after five years at Rice University working with @pushingarrows.bsky.social to become Dr. Buzsaki! Thank you to everyone who was there, in person, on zoom, or in spirit. ❤️

I will be *so* excited when I'm at a point in my career that I can pay less attention to it again. For now though, I benefit from you being on it, and appreciate your highlights!!
