These bills would add unreasonable bureaucratic hurdles, set unrealistic deadlines to submit petitions, ban important quality control measures, and threaten volunteers who collect petition signatures with felony charges and massive fines.
What is SB 7016? Florida bills would make gathering petitions for ballot initiatives tougher
Citing cases of fraud, two bills in the Florida Legislature would strongly restrict the process to get a citizen-led amendment on the ballot.

There’s an amusing Graham Greene novel called The Bomb Party in which an eccentric, incredibly wealthy man toys with wealthy Genevans to see just how much sycophancy they’ll perform and how much humiliation they’ll endure to satisfy their greed.

We’re living in that novel now.

Let me be clear: the so-called SAVE Act is not about security. It is not about election integrity. It is about suppression — pure and simple. This bill is a modern-day poll tax cloaked in patriotic rhetoric, and it represents one of the most dangerous assaults on the right to vote in a generation.

I'm teaching a course on the history of anti-democracy in the US, and before each class I have to choose which of the 47 relevant things that have happened since last class to briefly mention before getting into the lecture on stuff that happened in the more distant past. This is very not normal.
It’s so weird how we’re all just working like this is still a normal country.
