When the world's biggest insurer says climate change has pushed traditional home insurance to its limits, it's already too late to start preparing. And we are in no way ready for a post-insurance world.

New paper out today in GRL: Drying of the Panama Canal in a Warming Climate (shorturl.at/TJ3aj)

Main finding: Low water levels in Gatun Lake (main reservoir for Panama Canal) become more frequent and severe in a warming climate, particularly under higher emissions pathways

I would love love love to learn more about that. I deeply resent the presence of our gas-powered water heater in the basement. Can you share the name of the installer and manufacturer?

Apropos of nothing, I offer an unsolicited academic writing tip. Sentences that begin with some form of "Fig. X shows so-and-so..." are usually unnecessary, as they often just regurgitate what should be in the figure caption. Instead, *interpret* the figures in the text with appropriate references.

The Department of Energy hired five academics to raise doubts about climate change. 85+ climate experts (organized by @andrewdessler.com) reviewed their report. Our conclusion, detailed in 450 pages of analysis: it is biased, full of errors, and not fit to inform policy making.

The Gulf stream is mostly a wind driven current, which isn't going anywhere, though it does get some thermohaline components. It is a fallacy that it "keeps Europe habitable." Even the latest extreme hosing experiment (which assumed complete shutdown

This motto, which was reviled way back for its first iteration, actually turned out to be spot on a decade or two later. We had a great visit back home with my mom - the Forks, Rainbow Stage, the Zoo were all fun, with friendly Manitobans at all our stops.

I don't know who designed this hoodie, but clearly they made it with exactly me in mind. The tree-ring pattern is even oak, which is just perfect.
Hoodie with a printed logo that says "1867, Winnipeg, Canada", overlaid over a maple leaf silhouette with a oak tree-ring pattern inside.

I love to see papers on wind drought but also because so many models struggle to get the correct rhythm of ENSO + El Niño is a big influence on extended spells of weak winds, I worry this sort of analysis might still underestimate the risks. Definitely going in my read pile though, thank you.

Good grief. Does anybody understand what the “1 in X” catastrophe is? Maybe we should just forget about the curve-fitting and switch to “X times bigger than the previous record”.
