Sending so much love to the families of these children. I can only imagine what they’re going through right now. We need to do so much better at protecting littles in daycares, schools, and anywhere else where young children and other vulnerable populations gather.

Still no airborne virus mitigations in schools, hospitals, healthcare, LTC
Even in this article, handwashing is the first bullet listed on how to prevent getting the flu 😡

This is ridiculous. Firing a Director of Education with a seriously impressive resume for no other reason than to have “a fresh start” looks really bad.

The only fresh start we need is a new Premier and Minister of Education. We deserve @maritstilesndp.bsky.social and @chandrapasma.bsky.social

The Ontario Science Centre property at 770 Don Mills Rd doesn’t belong to Doug Ford. It belongs to the TRCA and the City of Toronto. I’m asking council to ensure that this architectural masterpiece be kept in a state of good repair so it can one day serve the public again.

It’s not always easy to be a dissenting voice at City Council, with no opposition bench to support you. But I vote with my heart and represent what my residents are telling me they need. Proud to do this with @jleiper.bsky.social right there beside me at the table.

Today I brought a voice of dissent to the city budget vote. The residents of Somerset Ward are my boss: not the mayor and not other members of council. I know you want a city that works and that leaves no one behind. This budget missed the mark, so I voted against it. I will keep fighting for you.

The report suggested Ottawa limit parking downtown and encourage pedestrian movement. This didn’t pan out. Ten years after the bylaw was adopted, the core was littered with surface parking—producing the “dead areas” Bacon warned about.

I have to wonder if this is the first of now many instances of professional advice being rejected. Still happens to this day.
Bacon, in Ottawa for six days, was joined by Sir Robert Matthew, a renowned Scottish architect. Together they produced a 6 page report whose recommendations were largely rejected by Ottawa’s planners, who said the consultants didn’t appreciate local history or understand "the Ottawa experience".

It’s nice to know that today, we’re still hiring consultants and/or soliciting advice and still ignoring it. Good to have traditions. #Sarcasm
Altogether, the work by Bacon and Matthew cost taxpayers $4,124.73 ($40,000 today). Their report may not have made a big impact on Ottawa's first zoning bylaw, but the saga showed that the voices of external experts carried less weight than the perceived wants and desires of suburban homeowners.

This. The cohort of 16-9 votes at council win, and claim victory and try to convince us that they’re doing the right thing and yet year after year, we see the same issues: chronic underfunding of social infrastructure while $ bleeds out to unsustainable suburban/rural wards.

Professionals offer their advice and recommendations in the public interest, and it gets rejected by untrained, unaccountable, and unregulated, who like the skills, training and expertise to make decisions. This is why a city architect is needed (not me, FTR, I’d be terrible)
