There's a non-zero chance that the reason he wants Greenland so badly is because he wants to rename it to Trumpland. In fact, I'd say that's the most likely reason. His advisors might have other motivations, but his personal number one is so he can put his name on it.

I don’t know why, but she’s exactly right.

There’s going to be a brief window where shelves at major stores are bare, layoffs are hitting blue collar workers especially hard, and the market is in the gutter where the tide of public opinion against him might be great enough that billionaires will be willing to use their senators to impeach.

Turns out the answer to the “Kamala they/them Trump you” ad was “Kamala Harris is for All/Us. Trump is for himself,” because that’s what’s happening (which was always obvious).

Whenever I read about the super prison in El Salvador, which is really like some big tents with a lot of barbed wire, it feels very opening scene of a batman movie before the super villain blows open the front door and sets them all free. Maybe we shouldn’t put all the evil eggs in one evil basket?
Nayib Bukele just said that 238 people he claimed were members of TdA arrived in El Salvador TODAY.

This may mean that DHS did NOT adhere to Judge Boasberg's order that planes in the air be turned back. If so, it would be--by far--the biggest act of defiance against a judge's order.

The right is freaking out because the federal budget went from $4.5T to $6.5T in about 5 years. We must be blowing money left and right on all kinds of stuff, right? Seems obvious, right?

You know what else happened in that time? The baby boomers started collecting social security and medicare.
2 lies I hear from the right about the federal government:

"The federal government has gotten so bloated!"

The federal government is the same size it was when Kennedy was president.

"Reagan was the last president to cut the federal government!"

There were MORE fed employees when he left office.

1) Trading resources for weapons isn't crazy. It's just capitalism with fewer steps. All we're really negotiating is the price.
2) Trump will be dead and gone before they can fulfill that contract. You can't mine an active warzone.
We can agree that it's shameful if it comes to fruition. I dont think there is any chance it does. I don't understand why people don't believe Zelensky is as good a negotiator as Mexico or Canada. He knows you give Trump the PR win and move on
Saw your earlier post Mark, and under any other circumstances I might agree with you —in principle. But this entire resource grab is being conducted under duress, and for that, I can’t in any way support my government’s conduct. In fact, I’m ashamed by it.

The deficit is roughly $1.8T, and after all of these cuts to social programs keeping people alive, they’ve managed to get it down to… $1.8T.
And fully half of it is a humiliating error where they mistake the value of a contract by 1000x confusing 8 million with 8 BILLION
DOGE says it has saved $55 billion in federal spending so far, but its website only accounts for $16.6 billion of that

If an AI company makes a really nice coding tool and then charges a lot of money for it, wouldn’t you just immediately use it to clone itself so you can use it for free?

Can anyone explain why these tech oligarchs want to run government? Do they think they can create more happiness? Can they build a future with a higher quality of life for the average person? Their own quality of life is already superb. What is the vision?

This is a perfect example of how naive they are about government operations: what do they do if all of the ATC folks take the offer? There aren’t scores of ATC consultants just waiting to get in there that can do it cheaper and faster than the federal employees. Are you ready to fly with Ai ATC?
Was literally talking to the union representing federal air traffic controllers earlier today about how there’s already a major shortage of air traffic controllers and the resignation offers they all just got from OPM could seriously endanger public safety.

A whole lot of mis-informed Trump voters about to find out that their paycheck actually was coming from the government and they just voted to cut that from the budget. Don the Con strikes again.
It's not just grants being paused -- it's also government contracts + procurements.

One thing that's not clear about OpenAI vs Deepseek: Deepseek's full model requires an insane inference stack, something like 1.3TB of VRAM. I don't think OpenAI has ever revealed the full size of 4o or O1/3 but it's believed to be much smaller. So lower up front cost, much higher operating cost.
As I said earlier, scaling was always more about business than science. Scientifically, there’s no law of physics that says AI advancements must come from scaling rather than approaches using the same or fewer resources. Scaling is just an incredibly easy-to-follow formula. 17/

There has never been a better opportunity for Europe to close the tech gap. All they have to do is be in the ballpark of American salaries & offer remote work and 80% of US tech workers would be open to it. Highly specialized, experienced people that can turn the tide for Europes lagging innovation.
Why stop at academics? There are so many of us in so many professions who would be thrilled to be poached!
If Canadian universities had a bit of vision, they would be launching a Manhattan project to poach every US-based top researcher. And the federal government would be drastically expanding tri-council funding and creating an expedited review process for those holding NSF and similar grants.

The Kinks started punk, and it was a response to the bubble-gum rock of the early Beatles. There are stories of them playing clubs together before they were famous and Ray Davies throwing stuff at the stage while the Beatles sang about holding hands. That’s literally the moment punk rock started.
The Beatles and The Stones and Zeppelin and The Beach Boys and The Who are all wonderful but when you reach the age of 56 you realize it was The Byrds and The Kinks all along. Happy birthday to me.
