You may have heard my arguments against the Electoral College before. Here’s a new one the Founders never anticipated:

If the President is elected by popular vote, he probably wouldn’t selectively punish entire states for voting against him.

Oregon is set to lose an additional $400 million in federal grants awarded for climate action and is among more than a dozen Democratic states losing federal funding after the Trump administration terminated nearly $8 billion for those states this week.

worth remembering that hoover's administration was defined by 4 years of economic chaos, suffering, dislocation, and fear. People genuinely believed the country itself was on the verge of irreversible collapse. He still got 40% of the vote.
wikipedia screen grab showing hoover won 39.6% of the popular vote in the 1932 presidential election

Training the military to “quell civil disturbances” is another step toward authoritarianism.

Linking it to “the enemy from within” is absolutely terrifying since that was the phrase Hitler used for Jews & others considered undesirable.

He doesn’t even hide what he’s doing.

Trump to generals: "Last month, I signed an executive order to provide training for a quick reaction force that can help quell civil disturbances. This is gonna be a big thing for the people in this room, because it's the enemy from within & we have to handle it before it gets out of control"

Trump wraps up a speech to military leaders that represented a major escalation of his effort to weaponize the armed forces into a tool he can use to violently quash domestic dissent. Hard to imagine how anyone with a shred of dignity can keep serving after this, which of course is the point.

Not a bad idea! I'm a huge fan of what they did in Nevada City & Grass Valley with the National Exchange and Holbrooke hotels so something similar would be very cool

When you have an administration that so constantly, shamelessly, openly lies, pretty soon there’s no faith in any information streams coming from the administration, so there’s no way to convey true information in a way that lands right, which leads to more chaos.

If Democrats ever get power again there needs to be a proper reckoning. Criminals need to be indicted, prosecuted and convicted for trying to subvert our democracy and rights for Trump.

There is no room for Merrick Garlands and milquetoast centrists anymore.

You need accountability.

Democracy, more than anything is a practice. I always think that the Civil Rights Movement succeeded because from the Civil War black Americans built institutions: universities, fraternities and sororities, churches, that engaged them in democratic practice.

generally speaking, and with the glaring exception of november 2024, the more directly democratic an institution has been, the better it has checked Trump (eg grand and petit juries); the more elite and insular, the less effective (the Senate, the Supreme Court, big business)

We’re frogs in the pot about this, I think. We’re so hardened to eliminationist, fascist rhetoric from the right that it hardly makes a dent when a prominent host on a major network suggests exterminating a large group of people. But he did. And nobody on modern Right gives a shit.

Completely agreed. I am referring specifically to the diesel fleet and the San Jose - Gilroy segment (and Salinas if it happens) though.

IMO Blossom Hill or somewhere around Metcalf is the logical end point for electrified service at least until HSR arrives. Move CEMOF to the quarry at Capitol too
seanmaiwald.bsky.social
Same with Caltrain. Run DMUs, sell off the older diesel fleet, save $$$

Multiple things can be true:

Political violence is toxic & Charlie Kirk’s assassination must be condemned.

Kirk was exceptionally talented & helped build a movement.

That movement brainwashed many young men with bigoted, violent poison.

Condemn his murder, but do not lionize him.

Yup. It’s almost like politics is basically marketing lol

To put this loan amount in perspective:

California is spending $500 million to widen a 10-mile stretch of Highway 37 in the northern Bay Area (through a wetland, no less).

But $750 million to save the *entire* Bay Area’s transit systems is apparently infeasible.
scottwiener.bsky.social
We’ve been informed by the Governor’s Department of Finance that it won’t agree before our legislative session ends (on Friday) to finalize a $750M bridge loan to Bay Area transit.

This loan was agreed to in our June budget. Without it, BART, Muni, et al will cut service.🧵
