#OTD in 1984, K-314 collided with USS Kitty Hawk after the Soviet sub surfaced directly in front of the carrier. K-314 suffered significant damage including losing a piece of a propeller blade that became embedded in the Kitty Hawk along with chunks of the sub's anechoic coating.

#OTD in 1944, USS Missouri (BB-63) was launched. The "Mighty Mo" would become the last battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy and later serve as the platform upon which Japan surrendered. She was decommissioned in 1955, recommissioned in 1986 and decommissioned again in 1992.

Commissioned in 1941, USS North Carolina (BB-55) could fire twelve tons of steel in one salvo, which was six times the payload of a long-range bomber at the time. The battleship also could reload and fire again without having to return to base.

#OTD in 1959, the ballistic submarine USS George Washington was commissioned. After a debate over payload versus living space, the number of missile tubes had been decided by a committee of 7. Each member wrote down a number which was added up and divided by 7. The result was 16.
