MEX-3’s untranslated region helps worms beat the heat

This Research Highlight showcases the work from Sean Ryder (@seanryderphd.bsky.social) and colleagues:

journals.biologists.com/dev/article/...
Figure 5: Germ layer patterning defects in the mex-3 Δ3′UTR mutant. (A) mex-3 RNAi results in dead embryos with a large expansion of muscle lineage cells (mesoderm, yellow). Control animals develop normally, with all three germ layers present and appropriately patterned. Cytoplasmic (C) green represents GFP::MEX-3 protein, nuclear (N) green indicates endoderm, nuclear (N) yellow indicates mesoderm and nuclear (N) red indicates ectoderm. (B) At elevated temperature, the mex-3 Δ3′UTR mutants form all three germ layers, but patterning appears defective with a moderate expansion of muscle lineage cells (yellow). (C) Fraction of embryos that appear normal versus abnormal binned as in Fig. 4. The genotype and the temperature of growth are shown. CTL is a control for the germ layer background (strain OD1854). All sample sizes and statistical test outcomes are listed in Table S3. Scale bars: 10 μm.

Heritage Foundation has released an absolutely insane policy proposal to label all trans people as domestic terrorists. It uses completely made up instances of terrorism and made up statistics but facts don't matter to them.

They want us all eradicated.
Page 1:
Flyer from The Heritage Foundation Oversight Project titled “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism (TIVE): Background and FAQs on Need for an FBI Domestic Terrorism Designation.” The page defines “Transgender Ideology” and “TIVE,” outlining beliefs allegedly associated with them. It claims such ideology justifies violence against opponents or frames opposition as violence. The text references the alleged assassination of Charlie Kirk, urging the FBI to classify TIVE as domestic terrorism. Page 2:
Continuation of flyer with a section titled “Recent Instances of TIVE-Motivated Acts of Domestic Terrorism.” Lists multiple violent events from 2018 to 2025, attributing them to transgender ideology. Includes mugshots of two alleged attackers. Followed by a “Frequently Asked Questions and Key Terms” section, addressing whether transgender people are terrorists, comparing TIVE with “Nihilistic Violent Extremism,” and discussing FBI designations.
Page 3:
Flyer continues with questions about Antifa and FBI terrorism classifications. States that Antifa and TIVE are separate categories. Lists ways the FBI classifies domestic terrorism and identifies typical characteristics of “TIVEs,” such as targeting Christians, mental illness, and online radicalization. Includes images: a “Trans Antifa” logo, a pink-blue-white-striped slogan image reading “Protect Their Right to Exist,” a photo of Audrey Hale with a firearm, and a close-up of a magazine with the words “Where is your God?” Page 4:
Section titled “Terminology Used by TIVE.” Defines terms including cisgender, deadnaming, Gillick competence, misgendering, “Right to Exist,” “Trans genocide,” and a phrase “You either have a live boy or dead girl, you choose.” Each is presented as terminology used in or associated with TIVE. Page layout is text-heavy, no additional graphics.

Copies of "Everyday RNA" are arriving in the US. I ordered 30 copies—they arrived at my house yesterday. If you haven't pre-ordered a copy, your best bet is to order directly from World Scientific Press . The online retailers won't get them until later.

In 2013, my father lost his life to multiple myeloma. Now, a variety of new treatment options are extending myeloma patient lives for years if not decades. It's been amazing to watch. Support the the NIH, fight back against RFK, and protect academic research.

There’s a book from political scientists Macedo and Lee that claims the COVID-19 pandemic was not as much of a threat to public health as was supposed, calling into question the role of expertise.

Here, an excellent corrective to that erroneous position:

Newsweek is reporting the RFK plans an outright ban on mRNA vaccines in the United States within a few months. That's a huge mistake. Please, speak out against those who would derail the most promising technology to curb virus spread since Charles Maitland and cow pox.

I did a thing. I wrote a textbook about #RNA. I wrote it so that those without formal science training could understand what RNA is and how it is used in medicine. It releases in the US and Europe on September 8th. www.worldscientific.com/worldscibook...

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

Charles Minard's 1869 data visualization of Napoleon's Russian campaign. The image has two main parts.
The top part is a flow map on a stylized geographical background. A wide, tan-colored band begins on the left at the Niemen River and moves right towards Moscow, representing the advance of Napoleon's army. The width of the band is proportional to the number of soldiers. As the army advances, the band slightly narrows, and numbers along the path indicate the decreasing army size. From Moscow, a thin black band shows the army's retreat, moving from right to left. This black band narrows dramatically, becoming a tiny sliver by the time it reaches the starting point, visually representing the catastrophic loss of human life.
The bottom part is a line graph connected by vertical lines to the retreat path on the map above. This graph plots the temperature against dates during the retreat. The line shows the temperature consistently dropping far below zero, providing a clear visual explanation for the massive losses shown in the black band.
