Sure, 'TRON: Ares' looks and sounds pretty cool (that NIN score is 🔥) but it's accompanied by a story that fails to make you feel anything at all. A real algorithmic uncanny valley of a movie-going experience.

Kathryn Bigelow enlists an A-list cast to tell the story of a rogue nuclear mission barreling towards the United States. A movie about stakes and nuclear holocaust, it succeeds as a detail-rich procedural but doesn't really land as a compelling whole.

Lucile Hadžihalilović's fourth feature, The Ice Tower, is now playing some US cities, but not Seattle (I don't recall an opening for Earwig either, which I caught up with via screener). In some ways, the new work plays like a sequel or companion to Innocence, her first. @seattlecritics.bsky.social

It's impossible for Daniel Day-Lewis to give a bad performance, even in an overly arty and ultimately unsatisfying film like #Anemone. #DanielDayLewis moviepie.com/anemone-2025/

SHELL: While it lives in the shadow of THE SUBSTANCE, stand by what I wrote last year on this Kate Hudson and Elisabeth Moss film and why horror cinema can be a big tent. The finale especially made me much less crabby. It's now streaming on VOD 📽️

As a drama #TheSmashingMachine doesn’t have an interesting enough cinematic arc to be satisfying, and as a sports film I was left still not knowing a heck of a lot about what was going on. moviepie.com/the-smashing...

Terrific performance from its adorable canine lead Indy aside, this mangy spin on secluded backwoods paranormal activity is a frustrating letdown. #GoodBoy sadly was not for me.

Dwayne Johnson gives his all to a movie less about brawling and MMA and more about his character's internal struggles.

His Oscar buzz is legitimate. However, with THE SMASHING MACHINE, has a movie ever been this afraid of its own shadow?

Now playing everywhere.

THE LOST BUS (2025) does not reach the heights of director Paul Greengrass' more acclaimed work, but it shows him still fully capable of creating pulse pounding action and suspense. My review.

'The Smashing Machine' sees Dwayne (“Don’t Call Him The Rock Anymore”) Johnson actually turn in a serious, actorly performance but this UFC biopic is shockingly flat and fails at the most basic aspects of filmmaking. It's quite bad.

THE SMASHING MACHINE: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has never disappeared into a role quite like how he does in Benny Safdie’s latest. It gives him room to triumph as the great actor we always knew he could be. See it starting today @siffnews.bsky.social 📽️

My review: www.inlander.com/screen/revie...
The cover of The Inlander's screen section with the headline It Doesn't Matter What Your Name Is! and the subhead Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine proves Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson can cook up a great perfromance with a still of the actor holding up a belt in victory.

The dark Irish drama 'Anemone' features the return of legendary performer Daniel Day-Lewis in a movie written and directed by his own son. It's not a movie that will likely connect with mass audiences but there's something eerily mystifying about the union. silverscreenriot.com/anemone-flow...

Since everyone is talking stand-up comedy this week, wanted to reshare this piece from the summer where I spoke to Marc Maron about his new film ARE WE GOOD? and the late, great Lynn Shelton.
