🚨 New Paper Alert! 🚨
I'm excited to share my latest research, “Building Capacity in the Public Administration” (with @annagumpert.bsky.social ). We examine a key tool for building administrative capacity: seconding officials from high-capacity to low-capacity public administrations.

We have a new working paper: Using new data on individual bankruptcies from 19th Century Britain, we find that most bankruptcies occurred where the economy was booming. Check out Jean‘s great summary here!

New Working Paper with the amazing @korntob.bsky.social : tinyurl.com/CESifoWPLocal.

It is also my first CESifo Working Paper.

In short: We study "local reallocation": the exit of some workers from production even though employment increases in the same area and industry.

A short explanation 👇

If you're more broadly interested in how the legacies of historical industrialization have shaped both long-term shifts and contemporary regional inequality in Germany, you may also want to check out this very cool paper by @sebastiantbraun.bsky.social‬ et al. 👇

Key findings:
1️⃣ Half of West German labor markets saw a “reversal of fortune” from 1926–2019.
2️⃣ Early industrialization spurred development but became a liability after WWII.
3️⃣ It created a lopsided economic structure dominated by large firms, limiting adaptability and innovation.

Devastating news at IZA yesterday. More than 25 years of hard work, earned reputation, and valuable institutional knowledge and public good provision wiped out with a single stroke. It’s hard to find the words.

Devastating news that @iza.org is effectively closing down 😔

It was (or at the moment, is) a wonderful institute and the network was tremendously helpful in dissaminating work in labour economics.

IZA will sorely be missed 😢

So sorry for all IZA employees!
