Brandeis Bio/Neuro. We study multiple aspects of sensory biology. Mostly in worms. Lab appears to be powered by vast quantities of junk food. Opinions mine. senguptalab.org

Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

Interested in metabolism? So are we! My lab has been exploring the cell biology of energy metabolism in the nervous system, and we are looking for postdocs. Cool sensors and microscopy, great work environment. Please help me spread the word!

his speech. It's like me as a college freshman summoning Seymour Benzer and Sydney Brenner to lecture them on neurogenetics.

Happy to share the inaugural paper from the lab. We describe a molecular mechanism for the activation of outer dynein arm motors that power the vital motion of cilia.

Here are three photos of places that have been described as "war-ravaged": Ukraine, Gaza, Portland. See if you can guess which city someone is lying about.

Chemotax/Thermotax to Hawaii or Micronesia. There's a thought.

Picking worms in Micronesia. I am clearly doing the absolute wrong kind of worm science.
Super interesting study tracing the spread of Caenorhabditis from Hawaii to Asia.

C. elegans is a real animal and we set out to understand how it comes to have its distinctive biogeography. Its ancestral center of diversity is in the higher elevation forests of Hawaii. Its closest relatives are spread across east Asia. Did they travel from Asia? [Preprint 🧵]

Ed Kravitz passed away yesterday.
He was a remarkable scientist and mentor- brilliant, curious, creative, and kind. I am grateful to have learned from him. His legacy will endure through his science and through the many people he inspired.

We will miss you, Ed.

Immigrants, particularly on H1Bs, are the lifeblood of American innovation. If you wanted to hurt US competitiveness in the next century, I can think of few more effective ways than a move like this

Even when found illegal, the mere intent will have irreparably harmed our future

Important to remember that H1B visa holders have their whole life in the US. The home they rent or own is here. Their family. Their kids go to school here. Being locked out of the US is also in many cases rendering them homeless and away from their family, with no obvious path to return

So can I ask for all reviewers who don't like my papers to be fired? Or nah?

Of course you mean it's too many servings, right? 2 would've been more appropriate. Like for a pint of ice cream.

A huge shoutout to all the dedicated grants management specialists at the NIH who are working around the clock to push grants out before the Sep 30 deadline. And also to the POs responding to frantic emails.
Not an easy job under the best of circumstances and right now it's the pits.
Thank you!

Indeed. These are central neuron cilia. Has been a big knowledge gap in the field.

Moving into a cabin deep in the woods and going totally off-grid is sounding awfully attractive right now. Anyone want to join me?
