Without forward-looking models, biodiversity policy risks missing the road to recovery.
Our new PNAS article calls for predictive tools and a World Biodiversity Research Programme to guide global action.

🌍🌳 A new global study warns that many of the world’s tree species are under serious threat.

It also identifies potential climate refugia — areas where trees could persist if protected, and calls for urgent conservation efforts.

Climate warming is not a recent phenomenon; it has had detectable impacts on plants for at least 134 years!

Key results of community dynamics in one of the fastest warming biomes. @nanitundra.bsky.social show no homogenization, no simple borealization and shrubs playing a major role. More here ⬇️

Despite plant species richness being greater at warmer lower latitudes, richness change was multi-directional, leading to no net change over time on average. However, species turnover was widespread, with species being gained and/or lost at 59% of plots and abundance changes at 99% of plots. (2/8)
Figure with six subplots showing that overall plant net richness change was not different from zero. Species richness increased with increasing forb cover and decreased with increased erect shrub cover. A close-up shot from above of Papaver dahlianum (Arctic poppy) in Svalbard.

Excited to start this experiment to understand #forest #tree community reorganization under pulse and press climate change. @laurachevaux.bsky.social is leading such an effort, and we spent all day planting seeds ! @agencerecherche.bsky.social @agroparistech.fr @ibb-botanic.bsky.social @csic.es

Our study ‘The global human impact on biodiversity’ is out in Nature!

Through an unprecedented synthesis (2133 studies!) we show that humans are not only shrinking species numbers—but reshaping entire communities across the planet. 🌍🌐🐟🌿🪲

We tackled how the different drivers of forest temperature determine plant communities. We found that shaded valley bottoms harbor 5 (30%) more cold-adapted species! doi.org/10.24072/pcj.... Will it lead to microrefugia?
