I’m really proud of my 12yo for taking risks and doing things he loves but isn’t as good at (yet) as he’d like to be.

I’m proud of myself for helping him work thru insecurity and build the courage to take these risks.

And I seem completely incapable of applying any of this wisdom to my own life.
This is absolutely true. As somebody that used to teach- there’s a LOT of emotions and self worth tied up in ‘failure’ and so a LOT of people just won’t do something unless they know they’ll be good-great at it. Knowing how to calm yourself down and protect your self-worth is a HUGE skill!
Getting comfortable being bad at something, at doing something you're not yet good at, is just as much a skill as whatever it is you're trying to do.
