David Graeber: "At the moment, probably the most pressing need is simply to slow down the engines of productivity."

A practical utopians guide to the coming collapse - David Graeber
What is a revolution? We used to think we knew. Revolutions were seizures of power by pop- ular forces aiming to transform the very nature of the political, social, and economic system in the country ...

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

A big justification for universal basic income is that if the real median wage had grown as much as productivity grew over this same period of time, all three lines would be near $50 per hour. UBI can be seen as a GDP dividend. Wages will never fairly distribute GDP growth. UBI can do it directly.

Tranquil Saturday evening in the congestion pricing zone. Busy sidewalks sparse roadways. Inspiring to see the results when good public policy is finally implemented.

Dems would get much more traction finding and promoting people saying what they know and experience.

What has more impact, This man speaking his mind or the Dems speaking “in unison “ ?
You guys need to see this and take it in…

While most public transport agencies think their job starts and ends at the turnstile, Dutch railways operate as a door-to-door mobility provider.

By investing in cycle parking and sharing, their ridership and revenue levels have steadily increased, creating a virtuous circle of sustainable travel.

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

The details matter for better people-oriented transportation facilities.
These hedges separating the cycleway from the roadway prevent spray from motor vehicles during heavy rain whilst also providing additional comfort to cyclists by separating them from motor traffic. Drainage for both the cycleway and road is located underneath the hedge.

2024 was a great year for housing in Spokane, according to permit reports being presented to the Spokane City Council Urban Experience Committee right now. The city set a bunch of new records, including for most residential units permitted in a year and most multi-family units permitted in a year!

Less designing around cars, more designing around people. Please and thank you.
A new bill introduced at the state legislature by longtime housing advocate Jessica Bateman would represent a sea change, limiting the ability of cities and counties to mandate high amounts of parking.

Fantastic idea! We need to deregulate a lot of the zoning laws that encouraged (or forced) suburban sprawl for many decades now. Neighborhood shops and restaurants decrease traffic, decrease DUIs, increases walkability, and gives neighborhoods a sense of place. Better for people and environment.

It's almost like we should be designing infrastructure for people instead of cars or something. Policy has impacts.

Earlier in the season the same referee gave a 2nd yellow card for a similar (honestly less egregious) kick. Back then everyone said the ref "had no choice" but to enforce "the letter of the law". What changed?
