Today is the day! My book is out in the world. It’s not a friendly world for writing about science or women or especially women’s bodies right now. But I’m so proud to be telling a story that makes a certain type of person very, very angry. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/casey...

The Pelvic Floor Is a Problem
Everyone’s suddenly obsessed with the pelvic floor—physical therapists, MAHA influencers, me. Could this deeply misunderstood body part really be the seat of so much modern dysfunction?

I wrote this piece because I only learned about pelvic floors a few years ago, despite having had one all my life. And then it turned out to be where I store all my issues. And then that turned out to be true for a lot of people www.wired.com/story/the-pe...

ALSO: pelvic floor PT here, and a lot of times Pilates is one of the worst things you can do for your pelvic floor in re: pain.

for folks replying to this piece I wrote "mm that's why you should really do pilates"--I've lifted weights for 11 years. I can play my pelvic floor like Mozart played a piano. It could defeat three men in single combat. I labored in birth less than 20 minutes. Still, STILL: sudden, debilitating pain

I won’t get into my business but I will say that I have told men in my life for years that they need yoga and pilates more than we do. I say it doubly hard to Black men. Folks don’t listen.
In talking to people about this I learned that many think, for instance, men don’t even have pelvic floors. Buddy, do you ever

Casey is the best in the world at writing this specific kind of piece, she's been doing it since forever, we're blessed to have her curiosity and clarity on display for something that can be so nebulous both in the abstract and in attempting to visualize it concretely.

"Now might be a good time to try and detect your own pelvic floor. Sit on the corner of your chair, or more ideally the corner of a table, so that the area between your legs is in full contact with the surface. (If you’re in a public place or office, try to be … a little bit subtle about this.)"

I was sent to do pelvic floor PT after almost a decade of pain (which I had seen multiple doctors about) and I couldn’t fucking shut up about it- It’s an important muscle group in the core of your body!!!

Sharing to read later, but also….I read somewhere that part of standard postpartum care in France includes pelvic floor therapy, and after working in the birth world for years, I think it’s a shame we don’t do that here.

This is a super important read, especially if you have a connective tissue disorder - our ligaments are so loose, we unconsciously compensate by clenching internally, and the chronic pain fallout from that can be astronomical.
