New pinned post and info sheet!

I'm curious and passionate about a whole bunch of nerdy and cool stuff! I also publish a fortnightly retro gaming and anime 'zine and write on several blogs:

Scanlines zine: betweenthescanlines.itch.io
Main blog: scanlineartifacts.wordpress.com
A pixel campfire themed info sheet giving an introduction about how I'm a self-employed freelance writer, a zine publisher, a collector and enthusiast of older games and computer/console hardware and also run a racing competition, and very much into 90s and 2000s anime!

Passionate about PS1, Amiga, Wii, and Mega Drive in particular!

Flying high in SVGA skies. Flight Simulator 5.1 was the first of the long-running series to be distributed on CD-ROM, putting the tech to good use with incorporating satellite imagery and fancier weather effects.

📺: Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.1, Bruce Artwick Organization, 1995 (DOS)
An external shot of a polygonal Learjet taxied into takeoff position on a textured mapped runway beneath a similarly textured pinkish blue sky An inside shot of the aircraft's cockpit dash with many analogue dials and LCD displays in red A front shot of the Learjet taking off from the runway A gorgeous external shot of the 'jet banking beneath the pinkish blue cloudy skies and passing over Mount Rainer.

Protip: for any cis people who don’t already know, the phrase “this person” is an extremely obvious way transhobes often degender and/or misgender trans people.

you should generally not use that phrasing. especially if you are criticizing someone who happens to be trans.
A guy holding a handgun with an oil filter screwed on as a shitty DIY suppressor/ silencer.

The oil filter is labeled with “this person”. The gun is labeled with “degenerate tranny faggot”.

Mega-softs for 1993 going into 1994! 🔥

Packed into our Japanese copy of Phantasy Star IV is a sweet timepiece of 16-bit SEGA in Japan.

Love to see Shining Force II here ❤️
A photo of the cover and back panel of the fold out pamphlet with Sonic in classic pose on the front and Ecco the Dolphin on the back Shining Force II! A sweet cartooney ad for one of my favourite TRPGs. A photo of four folded out panels, mostly focused on Mega CD games Another six panels, including Aladdin, Gunstar Heroes, and Pro Striker

"A fierce battle with Dark Dragon ensued..."

The original Shining Force, vanquishers of the Runefaust Invasion and the sinister guiding force behind it all.

Now, we turn the page to twenty years after...

📺: Shining Force CD, Sonic! Software Planning, 1994 (MCD)
A CRT TV snap of the cinematic, voiced intro to Shining Force CD that summarises the first game and gives you a brief overview of what happened in the 20 years between that game and SFCD. It's some gorgeous pixel artwork of many of the characters you recruit, from centaurs and birdfolk to robots and wolfmen, all posed together for dramatic effect. Composite connection.

The fate of an unfortunate jetpack courier not careful enough in a corporate tower swarming with geometric biological horrors and rogue defence systems.

Also available on DOS and ST, and also on Switch as D/Generation: The Original.

Combat gameplay from Ragnarøkkr, PC-98 (1994)

A forgotten strategy role-playing game with some really great art. Developer Glodia would stop making games soon after, but ex programmer Hiroyuki "Hoee" Kuwata has since created a dedicated fansite with downloads:

On the same 'Anime 101' website, we've got a neat Ghost in the Shell gallery.
Picture Archive: Ghost in the Shell - a gallery of jpgs and static gifs arranged in an unsymetrical grid. A snap of the webpage open in Windows 98 with a profile shot from the movie of the Major against a city background.

What is anime, one of the saved websites on the disc asks and answers.

The term anime does have a potential origin as being derived from dessin animé as France was one of the earliest hotbeds of weebery (affectionate) in the 70s.
An offline website with various images and a couple of paragraphs of text explaining what anime is and what the word means.

Every smartphone in the world contains a CPU descended from one designed by a trans woman in the 1980s. The Matrix is one of the most influential movie franchises of all time. Electronic music was pioneered and popularized by a trans woman. I could go on

i think my favourite part about being a trans woman is how much of an impact we have on culture. a friend reminded me today about a popular meme format she created. another friend today casually told me about how she was the most notorious roblox hacker when she was a child.

just a day in the life!

Visions of a Spice Opera.

📺: Dune, Cryo Interactive, 1992
A crt screenie of a towering defence turret shown in profile against a gradient purple sky. A shot of Cryo's vision of a subterranean Fremen sietch with stairs spiralling around brown rocky pillars. Cryo's version of Paul Atreides (very much inspired by the 1984 movie's Kyle Mac Lachlan) seen from the front and head and shoulders perspective against dune sands and gradient blue sky A pool of subterranean water, gathered by windtraps on the surface

Yeah, it's a mishmash with Cryo's own interps.

Yeah! I was a fan of the original release of Spice Opera, especially its rendition of Ecolove.

Shame the remaster isn't available on more general release for CD/LP.

Going through someone's old saves on our copy of Buck Rogers for Mega Drive and came across these champs, stars of a Red Dwarf-alike space comedy.

Loving the father and son Al duo.

"Awright, geezer. Lemme have a shufti at the wotsit, atomic motor; I'mma dabhand at this."
A party of BBC comedy stalwarts; Dave, Fat Lagger, Panty Hose, Dabhand, Big Al, and Al Jnr

The whimsical fantasy and dalliances into child-frightening horror of one early 80s British edutainment program.

📺: Granny's Garden, 4Mation, 1983 (BBC Micro)
"There is a magic tree here."

A 4x3 grid of vibrantly green and purple pixel trees. "Welcome to the Kingdom of the Mountains."

A white snowy mountain and a blue cave entrance with green and purple trees. "I am the King and Queen's Blue Raven. I have MAGIC powers. Would you like me to help you?" A blue pixel bird asks "We are in a hallway."

"It is very dark but you can see
a door leading to the kitchen,
a door leading to the backroom,
a cupboard,
and some stairs.

Where do you wish to go?"

Tested on humans since 1997. The Platinum range: friend of the cash-strapped, though not always that popular now with collectors.
