Just saw a Parkland survivor post about being on lock down at Brown University.

We've failed generations of kids with our gun fetish

There was also a school shooting in Denver today. At least three kids are in critical condition. In a world where politics will invariably lead to one news story being prominent, think about the kids and what we as a community are doing wrong.

Came back home for two days, and visited the new Hooper-Renwick library and museum (which is walkable from my parents house)! Phenomenal library and museum. I really admire the effort taken to preserve Black history (former segregated school), and the library is going to be a gorgeous third space.

Genuinely, I only saw this on the Guardian this afternoon. I wish more people knew how critical international students are to US interests in STEM / graduate education as a whole. Self inflicted wounds are the most painful.

I was rejected… likely still would have been rejected in other years, but really discouraging for a lot of grad students. NSF cut so many awards this year.
🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!!

But...good news and bad news.

👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now.

👎 # of fellowships went down by 51%

(1000 this year vs. 2036 last year)

For Americans who didn’t get the joy of living through the Truss/Kwarteng budget, this is the point where the government starts to call the stock market left-wing and/or woke.

Also, as usual @rajiinio.bsky.social has a wonderful take on this. Scaling is the path of least resistance, not the only potential path.

This applies to education too, especially design projects. When constrained by $$$, you have to build with efficiency, meaning you learn more in the process.
This is at the heart of almost every AI-enabled disaster: Scaling is not the only way to improve, it's just the easiest; training on copyrighted work, ignoring data quality, overlooking evaluation validity, etc are not actually"necessary evils", but just represent the path of least resistance.
As I said earlier, scaling was always more about business than science. Scientifically, there’s no law of physics that says AI advancements must come from scaling rather than approaches using the same or fewer resources. Scaling is just an incredibly easy-to-follow formula. 17/

Wonderful thread.
As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

Late to this, but really good article! Safety-critical control, at least for now, should probably be wholly independent of LLM-driven decisionmaking.

Made thanksgiving dinner for some grad school friends yesterday! Made turkey, mac and cheese, creamed spinach, roasted potatoes, and a premade apple pie (don’t judge, I was tired). Used a jerk chicken and yogurt marinade on the turkey, highly recommend. Now to deal with leftovers…
