It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic killing of our colleague, Ziyad El Toum. Ziyad, 46, was killed near his home in Khan Younis in Gaza around 04 July 2025, while attempting, along with his relatives, to reach and assist an injured family member. Tragically, Ziyad and his relatives did not survive. Ziyad’s killing is a devastating loss for his family and friends and our entire team. We extend our deepest condolences to Ziyad’s wife, extended family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Their dignity, safety, and property must be respected at all times. * Ensure access to health care – Medical personnel, facilities, and ambulances must be protected. First responders must be able to reach the wounded and save lives without fear or obstruction. * Safeguard essential services – Infrastructure linked to water and electricity is vital for the survival of families and must be preserved.

The presence of unexploded ordnance lying in the path of the wildfires has triggered further concerns. For communities already affected by years of conflict and violence, this adds another layer of threat to their lives, disrupting their access to essential services and livelihoods. We are in close contact with our Movement partners at the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and IFRC to closely monitor the situation and provide support. This includes the delivery of essential relief items such as canned food parcels, bottled water, and medical supplies. We are deeply alarmed by the intensifying hostilities in Gaza City and Jabaliya, which have reportedly caused dozens of deaths and injuries among civilians over the past 36 hours. The intensification of hostilities comes as Gaza’s already, decimated healthcare system struggles to absorb a relentless surge in critical cases. Nearly all public hospitals in Gaza are shut down or gutted by months of hostilities and restrictions on the entry of critical medicine, supplies and equipment. The few medical facilities that continue to function, including the Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah, are overwhelmed and running dangerously low on essential supplies, including fuel, and even body bags. This severely compromises their ability to treat the wounded or ensure dignified management of the dead. We urgently reiterate our call for the protection of medical personnel and medical facilities in Gaza. They must be respected and protected to safeguard a lifeline for the wounded and sick. All feasible steps must be taken to support their work, ensure their safety, and guarantee that they are not deprived of vital resources.

Civilians are now coming to terms with the impact of this armed conflict. • Hundreds of people were injured or killed: families are anxious for their wounded loved ones or are mourning their deaths. • Many families were made homeless: 120 houses were destroyed and 500 more were seriously damaged in Tehran alone, according to official reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross reminds all parties of their responsibility to respect international humanitarian law to avoid further suffering: • The rules of war aim to limit human suffering in times of armed conflict. They must be faithfully applied by all parties. • In particular, every feasible precaution must be taken to protect civilians and civilian objects when military operations are conducted.

📍Gaza | Yesterday, once again, most patients we supported in the Red Cross Field Hospital suffered gunshot injuries, with responsive patients reporting they were wounded on their way to an aid distribution site.

Out of 149 patients, tragically, 16 were declared dead on arrival.
On Tuesday, the 60-bed Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah received a mass casualty influx of 149 cases. Tragically, 16 were declared dead on arrival, and three more died of their wounds shortly thereafter. The vast majority of patients suffered gunshot injuries, with all responsive individuals reporting they were wounded while on their way to an aid distribution site. Since 27 May, the field hospital has had to activate its mass casualty procedures 20 times. The scale and frequency of these incidents is an alarming testament to the intolerable dangers civilians face as they attempt to access assistance. Civilians must have access to food, water, medical supplies, hygiene items, and other essentials. The rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance must be allowed and facilitated. Those injured must receive the urgent medical care and attention they need as soon as possible.

The number of patients received in the last two weeks at the Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah (933 cases, including 41 that were declared dead upon arrival) is higher than all mass casualty incidents over the 12 months prior combined. An overwhelming majority of patients from the recent incidents said they had been trying to reach assistance distribution sites. The unprecedented pace at which such high numbers of patients are arriving at the hospital and requiring immediate intervention has strained and exhausted staff. Supplies are being used faster than they can be replenished. Recent days have also seen an increase in hostilities around the few remaining and functional hospitals. Under IHL, wounded patients must receive the medical care and attention required as soon as possible. To this end, medical facilities must be respected and protected.
