If all the other technical stuff about "so what was the point of switching to Blacksky if a ban still makes you invisible" evades you (like it did me for a second), Rudy breaks it down in this thread with very straightforward metaphors. Give it a read.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

and I somehow apparently follow like zero people who are in charge of bluesky so I have no idea if they are malicious or incompetent.

but since I play Malicious or Incompetent constantly in publishing, I know the answer: when you're fuckin' with people's livelihood, incompetence is malicious.

(4/3) That said, I'm not going to *assume* ATProto is going to go horribly off-course, and I know Rudy is probably trying to figure out how to get Blacksky on its own appview. Just making plans.

Yes, I know Discord had that data breach lately, but while I do of course give grace to smaller teams working with less resources I also have to balance that against what the community will be able to make the most of with the least friction. Which might honestly be Discord. (3/3)
sjhdoesgames.blacksky.app
At present that replacement is a toss-up between Stoat and *sighs* Discord.

Stoat's main issue at present is mostly that I want to see how they handle the next month. If they need more time to spin up, then I'd rather go to Discord and let Stoat cook until they're steady. (2/3)

All of these things said: I *do* have a Mastodon account but for various reasons I don't really vibe with it (do not give me advice about to use it).

Even being on Blacksky, if for w/e reason ATProto goes belly up, you can find me at least at whatever replaces my Twtich Guilded server. (1/3)

I get it. Conflict resolution and restitution are hard things. And should be saved for people who actually *want* to approach problem-solving in good faith. But busting the balls of other working people trying to navigate something uncharted for them is not the way. (3/3)

I'm not going to re-litigate how itch handled things here (and I am drawing a boundary: I will either mute you or block you if you try to what-about in my mentions), but there is a space in-between "they're just small beans uwu" and "no, we have to have a reckoning here". (2/3)
sjhdoesgames.blacksky.app
Yeah, this is the essential thesis of the posts I just made. Because for sure, if there are things that are not going right with a service, those things should be addressed, but *what size* that service is matters in that discussion too. (1/3)

when I was defending itch I heard from a lot of - frankly to my shock - other queers who were like "it's a platform, platforms are the enemy" and until we're able to distinguish _as users_ the ways in which worker owned services aren't your enemy and deserve grace, we won't be seeing very many
sjhdoesgames.blacksky.app
This is obviously not the case with Bsky at this point, they have the resources to do better and Won't, but you can't come for everyone who makes a mistake like they're the second coming of enshittifiers. (5/5)

If you have the level of smoke for a big, multi-million dollar platform as you do a couple of people trying to build a thing from scratch, then you should ask if you're trying to be helpful or if you're just wrecking the bathroom to feel better about something else. (4/5)
sjhdoesgames.blacksky.app
Like, of course you should point out issues with a platform when they exist, but you also need to keep in mind who you're actually talking to and what they can do or have to do with what resources they have, and act accordingly. (3/5)

It kind of reminds me of Altair, which was a small and explicitly queer-friendly streaming service ala Twitch that basically got what-abouted to death because people expected feature parity from a platform with the fraction of the resources of their competitors. (2/5)

Also, re: last reposts—while Cohost was not a place without its faults I feel like another significant part of why it fell apart even aside from the issues Alyaza brought up is that, metaphorically, certain people brought the rot with them and that impacted a lot of how things went down. (1/5)

it is funny when someone accidentally invents Cohost from first principles, because Cohost was a good idea. unfortunately it is less funny to tell then what happened to Cohost

this was called Cohost—not enough people used it or spent money on it relative to the amount of money it cost to (1) pay its 4 employees a living wage for their labor; and (2) keep the site running, so it died, nothing like it has taken its place at the scale it existed, and now we're here

Yeah. I feel a type of way about it especially because right now I can barely spare the energy to try and make moves in the ways I *need* to for my own solvency, let alone figure out what I can do to help others. And it feels terrible to have to make that calculated of a decision all the time.

Every now and again, re-watching Defunctland for comfort videos reminds you of something about amusement parks that surprises you.

Like the fact that Six Flags was named for the "six flags" that have flown over Texas, including the Confederate flag. 😬

I played a little bit of Mabinogi back in the day, I was sort of more a Vindictus head. But Nexon... oh, Nexon, what delights you delivered us.

Can we get the word around for more donations to go to BlackSky so there’s funding for the infrastructure that can bring Link back?

From my understanding:

Relays are costly and expensive. Anyone feel free to chime in. Bluesky relays is what has him banned.

People who rightly distrust agentic and generative technology are simply making a point of reinforcing that mental boundary and everyone should do the same. Your computer does not think, is not alive, and will never think nor come to life, nor should you want it to do either. (2/2)

The most I'm going to say about current discussion topics is that while I joke about having high or low computer mana and the like, I also am cognizant that computers do not think, are not magic, and treating them as if they actually think or Do Magic is Really Bad. (1/2)
