Comics/graphic novels aren’t recognized or taken seriously as literature in the publishing industry, despite taking twice as much work to create as prose novels, and it just breaks my heart.

This from @leighkunkel.bsky.social was incredibly powerful to hear at the #JournalismIsNotACrime rally. Please read it.

Another journalist and I ducked behind a van to continue filming as the ICE agents shot at the crowd. I heard someone yell “they’re ambushing you” and then a pepper round exploded against the back of my head. Two agents had flanked the van we were using as protection and were deliberately aiming at myself and the other journalist.

I ducked down to check whether I was bleeding. As I was crouched behind the van, clearly injured and no threat to anyone, those agents took aim and shot me in the face.

Here's what I said at the rally. I hope @govpritzker.illinois.gov and others in our state and local government can move beyond (very important) rhetoric calling out authoritarianism and join their citizens who are putting themselves in harms way to defend their neighbors and tell their stories 3/

I try to focus this account so it's for my readers, but hey writers:

NEVER sign a contract where the publisher keeps your rights indefinitely. For short stories, there should be a point when you can sell reprints.

and NEVER sign your movie/TV/etc adaptation rights to a publisher. Those are yours.
