AMAZING DRAGON (1982)

When Amazing Stories commissioned me to do the cover for the premier issue of their newly redesigned magazine, I decided that the painting should encompass both the realms of science fiction and fantasy. 1/3
A man in a red spacesuit stands on an asymmetrical rock perch with a black dragon wrapping its wings around him protectively. Seen in profile, the dragon's maw burns with intensity matching its golden eyes. Wisps of smoke trail from the long crack of its mouth. The man's domed helmet is off, hanging just over his shoulder. He balances the butt of a long rifle on his hip. The yellow silk scarf tied about his neck flutters in the breeze. The sky behind is a gradient of acidic green giving way to yellow.
