I mean yes, but that’s why it’s fun.
A contemporaneous review from the Washington Post in 1986 reads “Watching "Maximum Overdrive" is like sitting alongside a 3-year-old as he skids his Tonka trucks across the living room floor and says
"Whee!" except on a somewhat grander scale.”

Tonight’s #31DaysOfHorror is Maximum Overdrive (1986). AC/DC wrote the soundtrack, which is fun.

if you’re writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go “oh that’s fine to say because it’s not a real person” (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

I think part of why so many people who leave traditional media for Substack descend into Poster’s Madness is because everyone really, really needs editors to tell us “no” sometimes.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

Three say they've been shot with pepper balls, sometimes while praying.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...

(RNS) — Despite potential danger, religious leaders and faith activists have been a visible presence at Chicago-area ICE protests, some waving signs with slogans such as ‘Love thy neighbor’ and ‘Who w...

There are a lot of places you are technically allowed to take children but people will look at you like you brought in a dead skunk.

I also love being a parent and I wonder how much of the reticence people have has to do with how generationally segregated our society is.

It’s socially unacceptable or inappropriate for kids to be in a lot of places, so people who don’t have them often don’t see them.

NEW: RFK transferred 70 public health officers to work for four months at far-flung Indian Health Service sites. Though the help is desperately needed, the deployment threatens to disrupt vital disease tracking and harm reduction work. www.politico.com/news/2025/10... w/ @mayakaufman.bsky.social
‘Straining everything in our system’: Indian Health Service transfers leave leadership vacuum
The four-month deployments are unusually long and target a chronic issue rather than an isolated emergency.

My pediatrician stopped doing COVID shots about two months before the government really announced anything. I ended up taking my daughter to a travel clinic and paying $150 out of pocket for her first shot.

I still don’t know if/when the second one in the initial series will even happen.
