I'm excited to share my latest study, published in @commsmed.bsky.social, that highlights the substantial & ongoing impacts of #LongCOVID on working-aged Americans. Even after the emergency phase of the pandemic was declared over, long COVID continues to afflict millions of Americans. #COVID

Three states take steps to ensure COVID vaccine access

Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Massachusetts will allow pharmacists to provide updated COVID-19 vaccines to residents without a doctor's prescription.

🧪 And House appropriators say: no cuts to NIH budget!

House subcommittee version just came out (link below). Holds NIH flat at $48 billion.

To be clear: this is far from over. But a good sign that science still matters across both sides of aisle.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS!!

I realize it's been 5 years but how is it no one remembers the early days of the covid pandemic and how scared we were? I was waiting for medical doctors and epidemiologists to do their thing and save us. I welcomed the vaccine after I almost died. Does no one remember how bad it was?!

The US Supreme Court has derailed researchers’ efforts to reinstate almost $2 billion in grants issued by the NIH. The court’s decision represents a remarkable reversal, allowing the Trump team to proceed with its science cuts.

Great graphic explaining why layered covid mitigation strategies are so helpful! Even one slice of cheese can break a chain of transmission!!!

There are 14 strategies in our Long COVID Defense Guide, depicted by 14 slices of Swiss Cheese, invaded by mice and viruses:
1.  Check Wastewater Viral Activity Levels in Your Community
2. Wear High-Quality Masks
3. Go Virtual
4. Increase Ventilation + Filtration — Move Events Outdoors with Precautions
5. Isolate + Test When Exposed
6. Isolate + Test When Symptoms Present
7. Stay Up to Date with Vaccines

Some good news for dog/cat owners (but not bird/fish owners):

Owning dog or cat could preserve some brain functions as we age, study says

Fish or bird ownership showed no significant link to slower cognitive decline in study with implications for ageing societies

Seeing Kamala Harris openly say that the system is broken was so powerful.

Just having someone in her position say it so candidly without qualification was beyond powerful.

Reminder for science budget watchers-- House and Senate Appropriations Committees are working on FY26 spending bills to determine NSF and NIH funding. The White House recommended a 57% reduction for NSF and 40% for NIH. But Congress sets the budget.

If people think American scientists are somehow going to land in Europe, I've got news for you about the difference between millions and billions.

www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Bar chart titled "Matters of Scale" comparing proposed US research budget cuts to the European Union's €500-million (US$571-million) "Choose Europe" fund. The chart shows:

* National Institutes of Health (NIH): $8 billion in cancelled grants and $18 billion in proposed cuts by 2026 (long orange bar).
* National Science Foundation (NSF): $5.1 billion in proposed cuts by 2026 (shorter orange bar).
* EU's Choose Europe fund: $571 million (very short blue bar).

The graphic highlights that the EU fund is much smaller in scale compared to the US budget cuts. Text above the chart explains the EU’s intention to attract US researchers in response to policy decisions by the convicted felon and rapist Donald Trump.
