Some folks have reported experiencing extended nausea and dizziness since being tear gassed in Brighton Park on Saturday. General reminder to seek medical care even if you think you can tough it out—document it all and start a paper trail. You never know if you may need it.

Yesterday I spoke to Brandon Lee from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee rights. He said they are still trying to get in touch with people who were taken. “This is very much a case of DHS deliberately trying to disappear people. Why else would they do it in the middle of the night?”

I'm off the frontline of protest for a minute, so I will be doing ICE patrols this week. There is always something to do, always a way to plug in.

Getting more care for my shoulder this week. It's in rough shape. I may not be on the ground protesting for a minute. Getting an MRI soon. Will know more then.

Beyond not believing that ten cars rammed them, no rational person believed that was even spatially possible on a Chicago street. It makes no sense!

Truth: No cars rammed ICE

Body-camera video appears to contradict the government’s claim that Marimar Martinez, 30, drove toward officers before one of them opened fire at her late Saturday morning in Brighton Park, her attorney claimed.

The Chicago FOP put out a statement criticizing CPD’s response to the scene after Border Patrol shot an unarmed woman multiple times, but no comment at all about, you know, shooting an unarmed woman multiple times.

Or the fact those same agents tear-gassed roughly 2 dozen Chicago cops.

Kind of feels like feds occupying our city for a month, killing one person and shooting another while attacking neighborhoods with chemical weapons and kidnapping hundreds of people already counts as a civil war whether the Guard arrives or not, but what do we know?

Weird thing where people say “no one could have predicted it” when really what they mean is their political commitments and orientation were such that they ignored everyone who was predicting it

Sorry but “no one could have“ and you having your head stuck up your ass are two different situations

Thanks for posting this update. I saw his wife’s post yesterday and am glad to hear he was released, and also learn more details—which are awful details but I’m glad we’re learning them!

ICIRR, BPNC, and the southwest side rapid response team are out with a joint statement recounting what rapid response team members and neighbors observed at 40th & Kedzie, where federal agents shot somebody earlier today, repudiating DHS claims.

Full statement here: www.instagram.com/p/DPaGLCEjW5C
A graphic labeled 7 of 12 reads:

Today in the area of 4000 S. Kedzie, Rapid Response Teams and community members firsthand witnessed:
• Federal agents crashed into a civilian vehicle and caused a multi-car collision on Kedzie
• ICE fired approximately 5 shots at a car, one person was shot
• Stemming from that collision, ICE detained a US citizen who remains in custody
• Multiple uses of pepper spray and tear gas on unarmed community members, including throwing smoke bombs upon exiting the area A graphic labeled 8 of 12 reads:

Today in the area Of 4000 S. Kedzie, Rapid Response Teams and community members firsthand witnessed (continued):
• Use of militarized tactical vehicles, including a tank, and helicopters in a residential neighborhood
• ICE agents were driving recklessly in a residential area
• ICE agents showing extreme aggression and violence towards community members
• ICE agents refused to show a warrant when violently detaining multiple community members in the area
• Teams and community members did NOT witness or participate in any "boxing in" as described by DHS.

Just sitting here thinking of the hopeful tenderness within bringing your guitar, trumpet, accordion to a protest that’s facing down line of fully armed and salivating-for-violence cops. 🥹

This is a theme we keep repeating too. Until you see it for yourself, I think it’s hard to really understand how completely unnecessary and disproportionately violent the federal response has been.

How much is for fun, terror, or social media, I don’t know. A mix of the three for sure.

I've never seen such escalation and use of force toward ends I just could not see. There was no real property destruction, no pushing into the neighborhoods to make arrests, very little obstructing of traffic. Saw chemicals and bangs deployed down streets the feds were not facing and did not travel.

Lots of questions about living conditions in South Shore following the federal agents militarized raid earlier this week.

This piece provides some historical context and framing around how Venezuelans landed in the predominantly-Black Chicago neighborhood.

Some see housing stock and affordability as underlying reasons why migrants landed in Black Chicago neighborhoods • The TRiiBE
As three Black neighborhoods were at the top for permanent migrant housing, residents are looking for all forms of government to put their communities first

“injured on duty”

by the feds
peternickeas.bsky.social
CPD has 20+ injured on duty this afternoon, most/all from federal use of gas. Related: no arrests by CPD, no documented uses of force by CPD. (I wasn't everywhere / didn't see every skirmish. And possibly some late-entry TRR forms to come.) Saw two federal arrests, saw one on video didn't witness.
peternickeas.bsky.social
Chaos in Brighton Park. This is representative of the amount / direction of pepper and smoke sent into the neighborhood, in this case, for no reason I can discern other than because they were leaving. Feds had a clear path out in a different direction, and residents were vocal but not violent here.

All eyes on Broadview, Illinois tonight.

Broadview is a suburb about 12 miles west of Chicago.

Our friends are reporting on the scene ⬇️

Heard an officer say "let's do it" and then, in the dark, they tackle Rabbi Ben to the ground. He's being loaded into a CCSO wagon now. Broadview police also here screaming at people.

Your own words and assessments say enough about your experience. I don’t have to say anything more.
solidaricats.bsky.social
You are 100% correct. These random people are just wasting your time and energy with complete nonsense! They were helping facilitate the brutality.

Also CPB, ISP, etc are fully armed to the teeth…and feeling threatened by grandmas and guitarists and rabbis? Like is strumming a guitar “aggressive”?
solidaricats.bsky.social
Lol you have very very clearly never been at a protest, let alone Broadview. Everyone should just block you and move on, you’re an op.

New statement from National Lawyers Guild of Chicago: 18 total arrests at the protest yesterday at the Broadview, IL ICE facility; 13 by feds and 5 by state or local police.

Four more arrests observed today in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood. Likely being brought to Broadview, per statement.

"NLG Chicago condemns arrests by state and federal authorities at demonstrations outside Broadview ICE detention facility and in Chicago

On Friday, Oct. 3, the National Lawyers Guild of Chicago (NLG Chicago) documented multiple arrests by federal and state authorities at a constitutionally protected demonstration outside the notorious ICE detention facility in suburban Broadview, IL.

CHICAGO - On Friday, Oct. 3, the National Lawyers Guild of Chicago (NLG Chicago) documented multiple arrests by federal and state authorities at a constitutionally protected demonstration outside the notorious ICE detention facility in suburban Broadview, IL.

NLG Chicago confirmed there were 18 arrests in total: 13 by federal law enforcement, and 5 by state or local police. Of the 13 federal arrests, 11 individuals were released without charges after being held for 12 hours. They were driven off-site and released at a gas station, a concerning pattern that NLG Chicago has witnessed with other recent arrests. The remaining two people in federal custody will be held until their appearances in federal court in Chicago on Monday." Image text:

"Of the 5 state or local arrests, 4 were released from police custody with misdemeanor charges or citations. The remaining person was held in custody overnight for a hearing today in Cook County criminal court, and was ordered released today. We expect this person to be released tonight.
Today, October 4, our legal observers on the ground in the Brighton Park neighborhood of Chicago documented four arrests. We expect that those arrested will be taken to the Broadview ICE detention center, where our volunteer attorneys will attempt to visit them in custody.

Our legal observers also witnessed many violent attacks by federal law enforcement on the community, while the Chicago Police Department stood by watching federal agents’ violence. At one point, a lone federal agent stood in front of a line of Chicago Police officers, and deliberately tossed a can of tear gas into a small crowd of community members who were standing nearby.

NLG Chicago condemns the use of police violence and criminal charges, whether federal, state or local, to suppress the righteous dissent of the people.

We will continue to defend the Constitutional rights of those standing up and speaking out."

Please amplify this demand. We need y'all. I was there. We were not in the road. ICE simply let loose on us to film themselves brutalizing and arresting protesters—and state police assisted them. They brought charges against scattered people to create a pretext for this inexcusable violence.

All charges brought against protesters at Broadview today must be dropped. When cops and agents attack crowds without provocation, they make shit up to justify their attacks (in his case, an attack waged on a cooperative crowd to produce fascist social media content). These charges must be dropped.

In the past 4 weeks in Chicago, ICE/CBP have snatched hundreds of people off the streets & homes, shot & killed a single-father in his car, smashed & abandoned countless cars, and deployed chemical munitions at protesters, journalists, & now on public streets. Today they cuffed an alderperson.
