We are deeply saddened by the loss of Greg Newby, who led Project Gutenberg ( @gutenberg.org ) with passion and purpose. Greg’s belief in free and open access to knowledge continues to inspire us and so many others working to preserve our shared culture online. gutenberg.org/about/newby....

Let us cast our minds back to the halcyon days of October 2018, when the world was different, and I was visiting @kbspangler.com in her lovely North Carolina home.

What with all the fibreoptic Internet cables on the sea floor I really think it's sad we don't have a film where a shark bites into one and accidentally uploads itself onto the web and starts eatimg people through their computers. It would be called WWW, vertically mirrored so it's like teeth.

Remember folks that we need to return to the old habit of reposting (retweeting) people's posts instead of liking them to allow the folks we think are cool to build their following. Let's continue to build one another's visibility as a community should.

This is something I’ve noticed in every form of media-if it’s not an immediate dopamine hit, no one is interested. I find it very frustrating, as it leads to an inability to think critically and really dig into the things that you consume, which then leads to art being treated like a product.
So I'd like to talk a little bit about the consumerism and anti-intellectualism that results in the cultural obsession with "cozy" fiction and YA, and how that impacts other forms of art, as someone in the business of writing challenging adult fiction

this will be a long thread, strap in

One thing I hope we can do as Bluesky gets larger is be less tolerant of the resistance grifters who will try to hack the platform for engagement and growth without any interest in adding anything substantive or meaningful

It’s a different kind of troll.

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.
